National Warranty extended contract??

When I bought my 2011 2SS/RS in July 2011 I was shown an extended warranty program for $2,000 that would cover everything for 84 months or 100,000 miles. It included the engine, transmission/transfer case, rear wheel drive, front suspension, brakes, electrical, air conditioning and seals and gaskets. The finance guy told me that we make our money not selling cars but fixing them when the warranty runs out. So an innocent 54 year old signed up. Since then I added a CAI from CA and Corsa Cat Back mufflers and had it dyno tuned for an increase of 26 HP. After reading the problems associated with the warranties here on this site I am wondering if I should cancel this warranty and get my remaining money back. It does have the same words such as "Caused by, or involving, modifications unless those modifications were performed by the manufacturer." And Vehicles not eligible for coverage "Vehicles modified from the manufacturer's original specifications."
I did contact the dyno store and they can reset to the original setting for free if needed. As I see here though that they could still see that you messed with it. i also contacted National Warranty and they stated that the modifications would have to show that any breakage was caused by my modifications. What do you think? Should I cancel and get a refund or hope if something breaks that they would fix it. After 37 year of driving cars I have never had to had anything from the manufacturer fixed. My car will only get about 7,000 miles a year.

I'm no lawyer, but the wording above leads me to believe that your warranty has been voided. Not necessarily with the exhaust or cai, but I believe the fact that you had a tune (whether it's switched back to original specs or not) would void the warranty. You have "modified the vehicle from the manufacturer's original specs" with the tune.

I think you should get a refund regardless of what the warranty will cover. Since you'll only put 7,000 miles a year on the car in 7 years (84 months) your car will only have 49,000 miles on it. Doubtful you would get your moneys worth out of the warranty. I put even less mileage on my vehicles (since I have way too many) so I never buy extended warranties.

One thought here. This also extends the 3yr/36K bumper-to-bumper part of the warranty that covers things like the onboard computers, HID's, stereo equipment, electric motors, defrosters, suspension, brakes etc etc to the time/mileage listed. Might want to reconsider...

EDIT: IF this is the GM warranty that is....

....not another one.

OP, unless you get it in writing that a "tune" will NOT void your warranty, I would personally get my money back, but that's just me.

Good luck.

I (like you) bought into the whole aftermarket protection bit when we bought our Mercedes CLS. The dealer provided it through EasyCare and it was about 3k.

Long story short we got rid of the car for something new. We had no idea until the dealer told us that we could get a refund but in doing so we had to provide the Mercedes payoff info, mileage report, and contract back to them.

So i'm not sure your situation but getting a refund might not be super easy to do.

Total waste of money in my opinion. My dealer was a real pain when I bought my SS back in Aug '09. They tried to sell me this crap for 15 minutes until I got totally annoyed and complained.
I think you have voided this warranty and your GM drive train warranty with a tune anyway.
Try to get a refund !

I just thought that If I was turned down by GM for using any mods no matter how little then the extended warranty would also not cover it. I am very happy with the small mods I did because it is a significant cheap performance upgrade, and it sounds very nice. I guess it's all about gambling. Will the car break or not? Will they cover it if it does break, Will it cost less than the $2,000 that I spent on the warranty?
The only problem that I have had was straight off when the drivers electric seat refused to tilt forward and back. That was fixed by GM.

Yes, I'd cancel and get a refund if possible. Not because of the modifications, but because 99% of all aftermarket extended warranties are not worth the paper they are written on.

I'd also see if the tuner can return the calibration to stock. Those minor of mods don't need tuning for. They killed your warranty for no reason. The car comes standard with a 100K powertrain warranty. If anything does happen, I'd stick the stock airbox on and see what they say. Are they going to give you warranty hassles for aftermarket exhaust and a calibration in the history? Maybe, maybe not.

The other key is to get to know the Service Manager where you will be servicing the car. Warranty on your car in the future is going to be a grey area. The better they like you, the more they will help you. Talk to them now about the situation before there is a problem and see what they recommend.

Yes, I just cancelled the contract and I will get money back based on how many miles are on the car (5,000 so far since July). If something does happen the CAI is real easy to take off and I can get the ECU changed back. Now I just saved myself a lot of money on my contract. Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this. I appreciate your help.
