Raising the top speed

I am getting the 2013 2LT camaro with the RS package. I'm going to get new rims and Y-rated tires. Can I raise the limited speed on the governor? What is the actual top speed of the vehicle?

If your getting the RS package the top speed on the limiter is 156. I don't see why you'd need to raise it more than that but yea it can be done. It can only be done through a tune though.

It won't be nesessary.....as stated above, its set at 155 mph......the tires that come on it are Y rated.....and you V6...on a track, flat out....with enough flat straight open road will top out around 148ish.....so you will never see the limiter.

This ^

But I'm curious as to why you would like to travel over 155mph anyways.

And as I recall, even though the roads in Oklahoma are flat and straight, they're not exactly smoothe.

How do they configure speed rating for tires? I have had a set of Bfg radial t/a's running 165+ down the high way (only rated to 118)

it is a safety issue for sure, but is more that tires are not rated for higher speeds because it cost alot to test them at those speeds. and a non performance tire is just a waste to pay for all the testing.
the tires usually do just fine. it is also a stretching issue on low ply tires. they will expand and decrease the patch size. very dangerous at high speeds

Speed ratings are determined by the tire industry and then tire engineers rate them according to the construction of that particular tire and tested at a certain speed, temerature and duration.
Most things that have a safety rating also have a safety margin built in. You should be able to exceed the rating for a short period under the right circumstances.

I have, as of today orbited the sun 55 times. When I was 18 and had a '68 SS I went about 150 mph a couple times on bias ply tires. They didn't use speed ratings back then that I know of and bias ply tires would not have been rated for anything near 150. If I had known that, I may not have done it.

Tires will go as fast as you want until they give up at which time you will know the limit for that tire.
