Leather seat seam tear

Hi everyone. I have a 2011 Camaro 2SS. On the driver's seat of my car, the thread that joins the front and and rear leather pieces has come undone at the outboard shoulder. The dealership says that the seat covers can only be replaced, and not repaired because it's got a special tag that says "do not repair" right where it broke. It has something to do with airbag deployment. But I don't think a little seam is going to stop an airbag that deploys at several hundred miles an hour.

Anyways, I want this fixed, but it seems like such a waste to have to pay almost $1000 for a new seat cover when I could probably remove the cover, stitch it myself and slide it back on.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Are there any guides that you know of on removing and installing seat covers? Thanks for all your feedback in advance.

Run it over to a local trim shop, I'm sure they'll fix you up.

The seam is intended to tear easily when the airbag deploys. Having it machine sewn normally will prevent deployment in an accident. The seatback should cost 250-300 so the dealer is trying to screw you bigtime.
