Crazy Cheap - New 2016 Hellcat!!

So I bought my 2016 2SS Camaro Convertible over a Challenger Hellcat for a few reasons: price (I saved 20%), better handling, better tech and I really wanted a convertible. And I love my car, no regrets. But this is eye opening.
The ad is Canadian, so $66,950.00 = $51,000 U.S. (at today's conversion rate).
$51,000.00 for a new 2016 Hellcat is a steal. I priced it on the US Dodge site and MSRP was over $71,000.00. Even with aggressive discounts you couldn't buy one of these for $51,000 here. It'd be worth the drive to Toronto if you're a Hellcat fan.

If the Hellcat was priced the same as my 50th, I would've had a hard time choosing between the two.

First I would check to see if the warranty would be honored in the USA. Lots of products, cameras and computers come with a warranty from the country of sale and aren't honored here unless it's the product that the manufacturer sent here to sell. Just a thought.

Don't forget to add 13% tax though. And maybe an import duty? Camaro's are equally cheap here in Canada, I paid the equivalent of 40k usd after tax for my 2ss

One big problem: you can't buy a new car in Canada as an American.

Same deal for Canadians (or anyone else) trying to buy a new car from the US.

It is possible to buy used though. AutoTrader.ca works pretty much the same way as AutoTrader.com.

And some people specialize in buying new cars then selling them 'used' for slightly more than they paid.

Chrysler does not honour warranties on cars that were originally sold in Canada then exported to the US.

And the brokerage fee you pay to the person that buys it new, then sells it as used.

If you just buy used, this is not an issue.

Wouldn't be worth it unless you're going after a ZL1. 50 to 60 grand is about the break even point (assuming that you are just paying MSRP) by the time you add in all the extra costs. Not just taxes, but plane tickets (if you're flying in), food/gas/accommodations (double it if you are driving there and back), possibly the cost of taking a couple days off work (depending on your employer and/or level of honesty) ... all these take away from potential savings.

Of course, for people that live right near the border it gets a lot cheaper. Toronto is less than 2 hours away from Buffalo. Entire thing can be taken care of in a single day so the only extra cost is some gas & a meal or two. Or if you were already planning on taking a vacation to Canada, most of the travel costs are irrelevant because you're already paying to get here & leave.

Of course an American can buy a new car in Canada. EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK! And vice versa. Now I didn't say it was hassle free, quite the opposite. But if you're willing to jump through the hoops then it's completely do-able.
And manufacturers WILL transfer the warranty if you want to tell the 'right' white lie, again one of the hoops to jump through. But there typically is a 6 month time elapse before the warranty will be in force.

I do not know of any legal means of purchasing a new car in either the US or Canada as a non resident. Buying from a broker (whether they are a pro that does it on a daily basis or just a buddy that agreed to do it for you once) isn't buying new. The broker buys it new & you're buying it from them used. Even if they don't drive it off the dealers lot, they are still technically the original owner.

I guess it is possible to fraudulently represent your nationality. But that doesn't exactly fall within the 'legal means' category. Ditto for lying to get warranty coverage. And I'm not even sure that would even work. Every OEM knows where each of their cars were sent & where they are currently registered. It shouldn't be that hard for them to compare the two data sets to see if a car isn't in its home country. Whether they do that as a regular practice or not is another question.

I believe GM is the only one that has a 6 month waiting period (from the time of original sale) for warranty coverage on cross border vehicles. Chrysler just considers it void once its exported from (or to) Canada. Other manufacturers simply don't care.

Nationality has ZERO to do with anything. So there would never be any need to fraudulently represent it. You could be from planet Pluto and personally buy a new car in Canada. Or the U.S.
