Paint over Plasti-Dip?
I was wondering if anyone knew if paint would adhere to a surface already painted with pasti-dip? And also, after it was painted over, could it still be removed like plasti-dip normally can? I am not a fan of the matte look, and their "glossifier" doesn't really seem to make it look much better, I really like metallic paints so.. You can probably figure out what I'm getting at!

I'm not sure if you have seen this, but dipyourcar sells plastidip that makes plastidip metallic.

the gentleman at home depot suggested going with a poly to go over the plasti dip to give it that gloss look, haven't tried it yet but have the paint to try. I would think if you mask off so the poly does not extend past the dip then you "should" be able to peel off. keep us posted

I had the same question too, so i had tried it on an old motegi wheel. I painted over the plastidip with some blue metalcast spray paint. It does work, but make sure you do plenty of coats with the dip first. If you don't you wont be able to pull off big strips it will only come off in dime sized pieces.

I did it, and would not recommend it. The answer to your question would be yes, it will come off as long as enough coats of plasti-dip are applied first (with no glossifier on top).
It didn't look right, and began to peel around the edges of the rim after just a week or two. I ended up going the powder coat route after wasting a lot of time (and money). My recommendation would be to do it the right way and powder coat them. It makes a world of difference. |
