Yeah I change my oil every 2-4K miles. And always checking the dip stick to check color, smell and viscosity of the fluid. I just hit 40k and doing rear diff, trans and all that soon!

+1

I tried 5W40, and I got over timing advance codes. I want back to 5W30, with ONE
quart of 0W40, and it's been fine.

Went from Mobile 1 5w30 to Amsoil 5w30 signature series. I guess the 0w40 would cover a wider variance of temperatures (cold start up to hotter ambient). I would just recommend what the manufacture suggest, I would guess that GM took that into consideration by recommending 5w30 due to so many other non performance vehicles recommending only 5w20.

Mobil 1. 5w-30. Every fall when I put it in storage. About 300 - 400 miles

But been doing research. I’ve heard good things about both 5w30 and 0w40. Wanting to use M1 as it’s readily available and what the dealer uses.

I keep seeing mixed answers on “use 5w30 because that’s what the manual says to use” and people swearing by 0w40 for protection and good oil pressure.

Are there any benefits to using one or the other? I live in the south so real hot summers. Not to cold of winters. I’ve seen M1 0w40 has closer viscosity to 5w30 with a lot more additives for protection. I also plan to be H/I/E , pulley, tuned, injectors. Etc. So it won’t be some 1k + RWHP. But won’t be no slouch either. I used 0w40 in my 370z (it was known for hot oil temps and breaking down without an oil cooler, I ran 0w40 in it and had good results)

To the oil gurus out there, Would 5w30 or 0w40 be better for my setup? Also what oils do you guys use?
Mobile 1.... 0-40 Has a little better additive package

"People" always know better than the professional mechanical engineers with MSc. and PhD. degrees who do nothing but design cars all day long...

If the engineers who designed our cars explicitly stated to use 5W 30, then that's what should be used.

I use Mobil1 5W 30. I have also used GM Dexos2 5W 30, with nota bene that that particular oil was for diesel engines, which means that it has a higher amount of detergents in the oil.

When I go to the race track, I use Mobil1 5W 50 because the 50 coefficient can handle higher temperatures. But for daily driving, 5W 30.

Since 0W is an even lower coefficient, it's an oil for colder climates, which means it would be thinner. Use the 5W 30 like the manual recommends, unless you plan to take the car to the track. My colleagues know what they're doing.
