Another place to never get in an accident is Houston Texas...the cops are lazy and take their good old time to get there(maybe not all but the ones my dad spoke to)....last time my dad got hit by someone who ran a red light...my dad called the cops and they asked him if everyone was alright, he said yes i think so...and they then said they wont come out and told him to just get each others insurance copies...my dad was like WTF he took off the whole front part of my car and they said they have more important calls to attend...

Just a button press away... Onstar, always there when you need them. Maybe the crash was not severe enough to trigger automatic crash response, but you can always press a button to request police assistance.

Here is a view of the rear quarter panel which was the least of the damage, The front fender is much worse than this

if your state penalizes you for someone else screwing up move out. . . besides that statement I will leave the politics to the side.

personally sounds like that one cop didn't feel like filling out a report.

as for the op sorry to hear about your car, but I would have called the cops. even if it was going to hit my license with points. a point isn't worth the extra in insurance costs each 6 months.

Cop arrived and said that we'd all get dinged, or, just let the insurance companies take care of it. Luckily for me, the guy that started the small chain admitted full fault, but it could have gone the other way just as easily.
I'm no legal guru, but that cop was wrong. He may have been making a general statement because it was a multi-car accident. But as for you being the one in front, and not actually HITTING anyone else with your car... no points.

This country may be turning into a Nanny (Socialist) state, but it isn't there yet, meaning we don't "spread the wealth/damage/points" to everyone, only to those who deserve it. A.K.A. if you don't BREAK THE LAW, no points.

Well, it did happen in good old CA. Hell, it was the CHP officer on scene that told all three of us that if filed the paperwork, we'd all get assessed the 1 point on our records, even if you aren't at fault. Awesome, huh?

in any crash, do one of two things:

1)start video mode on your phone if the visual evidence of the scene is strong enough proof
2) or start voice recording mode on the phone and start up a conversation.

There's a reason why those gizmos exist on your phone!!

Well, you all made me look it up, and the CHP officer DID give me bad info:

Quote:
If there is no police report, you generally won't be assessed a point, but the accident will be noted on your record and if you accumulate too many, you could get a point, says DMV spokesman Steve Haskins.
from http://articles.sfgate.com/2008-06-0...ommissioners/2

Seriously, he told all three of us that its the law that if the CHP files an accident report, all three are reported to the DMV and one point would be added to our records.

never heard of getting a point by filing a report, I think he wanted to avoid writing a report. Which only brings up my next point, if you can get a cop to come to a non injury accident at all in socal you are pretty lucky, they just don't want to take the time unless an injury is involved.

I called the Cops

Called the Van Nuys Cops, oh they're great let me tell ya....I was told that my accident did not meet the criteria for filing a report. Specifically no one was hurt and that it was to be considered a civil matter. The officer wass not interested in hearing anything more and told me that we handled it correctly contacting our insurance companies and that no they would not have come out to the scene. This is per LAPD Policy.
To protect and serve for sure

If you call the cops at the scene and they say handle it between your insurance companies, then youre good. Exchange information, take pictures at the scene, and for gods sake be the first one on the phone with your insurance company!

Been in this situation before. Trust no one! NO ONE! Call your attorney and at least touch base with him and let him know of the situation. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Hope it works out for you.

Reminds me of a story, I was driving down an LA freeway, was rearended... totaled my 01 Cobra, 2 months later I transfered to Va and got a letter.... I was found AT FAULT for the accident, and a wreckless driving ticket was cited, and was past due and there was a bench warrant written out in my name. Sometimes it just never goes your way, no matter what!

One ... I always get a police report. Once I had someone admit it at the scene and then when I tallked to his insurance company later they said he denied it. My insurance company had the report and fought his insurance company for me. In the end my car was fixed at no cost to me.

Two ... Never, ever heard of getting a point on my license when "getting" hit??? Lat time it happended to me (many years ago), I did not get any points.
