Be careful with the touchless washes, too. I've seen screwed up water jets that had super pressure build up really screw up some paint. Not to mention if you have vinyl stripes they'll peel em right off (actually, it's so concentrated it could probably peel the skin off your hand). Evidently debris will occasionally get into the lines and clog up the sprayer opening, resulting in extreme pressure. Also, you never know if the establishment is using quality soap or crap. Last but not least, it's hard for those jets to rinse everywhere, such as the space around the mirrors, trunk seam, etc. I'll use them on my other car but not my camaro. I hate hand washing but I think I'll be better off for it in the long run.

My wife and I toured southern New England in June (back again in August) to attend a wedding. The maintance manager at the Best Western in Mystic, CT let me use a hose to wash my Camaro. (I always bring my stuff) So, the car was nice and clean for the wedding Saturday morning. Needless to say it was a big hit with all the groomsman...

Touchless is worse. Harsh chemicals clean the car. A touchless wash will keep a clean car clean, but not clean a dirty car. Many car washes do not use enough soap. That is the lubrication for the brushes so they don't leave marks. Some car washes use fresh water to rinse others use the reclaim for areas in water restricted areas. Never chance it, wash it yourself. I have seen a pickup go through a wash and then a nice Lincoln. The truck lost a chain in the brushes and the Lincoln took the beating when it went through. If you cherish it, wash it yourself.

I hand wash most of the time BUT when you have some where to go RIGHT NOW and the car has bird turds and lots of dirt all over it, you need a wash, and you need it NOW. Mechanical car wash - HERE I COME.

I kept expecting something BAD to happen. like the side mirror getting knocked off or a folding chair getting caught between the car and the MACHINE and just beating the hill out of the car

I only hand wash and my own car. No one touches it but me. I agree that I NOT drive mine into a Car Wash.

Only car wash I go to is where I park in a bay and wash it myself with their pressure washer.

Just curious - for those who live in places with cold winters AND who will drive your Camaro year-round - how do you plan to wash it in the winter? I always thought a good, soft-touch car wash was better than road salt - wrong?

I can't do the soft touch car wash, even in the winter... the part where you have to line ur wheels up to the track - freaks me out! If I did do it - touchless - with no tracks... |

mine will be hand washed only. My Santa Fe is scratched to hell. But that is a combination of the crappy car washes here, the cats.. OMG the CATS! and my barn owners freaking pack of dogs. Car will NOT ever be taken to the barn. The husband thinks I am nuts, but I am getting a car cover and my baby will be covered every time she sits still for longer than a minute when home. Oh and I am wintering the car properly, at a storage place.
Not taking a chance of having someone slide into her because they cant drive. |
