Here in Central Florida there are a bunch of people in that 680 hp to 780 hp range, and no one has mentioned transmissions at all. They are 24% stronger than the last generation... and of course the 9.9" rear ends are great too.

640 is nothing for the trans or the pistons. The only ZL1 owners that I know of having any automatic transmission problems the the guys doing A LOT of drag racing and they are the guys flirting with the 9's. If you don't drag race it and have close to 800 whp then you should be fine.

By drag do you mean like actually going to the strip? Or are the road races considered bad too?

I'm one of those guys that have pooched my trans. I have also made a TON of passes at the drag strip, over 700, and I'm currently around 740 whp. The clutches were toast when we took it apart. I replaced mine with a GM rebuilt stock trans but am looking to buy an upgrade kit to beef it up. My car runs high 9s.

Yes, drag strip with drag tires on the car launching in traction compound prepped pavement that does not allow wheel spin and forces the transmission to "absorb" all the energy until the tire speed equals the engine rpm. This will bake a transmission after several hundred passes. Road racing won't phase it unless you overheat the fluid and never change it.

Thanks for commenting mrvenicess, I was thinking about you and Dan.

Mrvenicess took me for a ride in his Zl1 when I had gone to get my car tuned at Florida speed and power. Gotta say what fun drive that was; as he was smoke'm down the road I thought to myself, " I wonder how much of a beating and how long his tranny will handle that kind of power" as the launch was incredible, but then I thought if you aren't having fun in it, then you bought the car for no good reason. memories are everything. Not sure you remember sharing your ride with me, but I always will, thanks.

Worry not, my friend. That trans should be good well past that HP mark.

All the best,

That's what a fluid coupler aka torque converter is there for. You are not going to bake anything by doing a few hundred launches at the strip and runs of around 11-12 seconds.

Now on a road course is really where you're going to destroy shit. Not saying that he will, but a 20 minute session of high RPM full throttle and constant shifting up and down is going to be a helluva lot more abusive than a bunch 11 second runs at the drag strip.

A typical drag run with automatic ZL1 has 3 shifts in the 11 seconds. The torque converter helps the launch but every shift is all on the trans and the engine is on the limiter. Lower gear shifts like the 1 to 2 shift are really the hardest because the torque magnification in the lower gears.

I don't drive any road course where I need first gear on the track and I personally don't hardly use second gear much because these v8's can pull third and put down lap times just as fast as dropping to second in the tight turns. The autos are getting hot on the road racing tracks but as long as owners are changing the fluid regularly no one is reporting problems road racing.

2 drag racers that I know of have had auto transmission problems, one of them answered this post. No road racers that I know have had auto transmission problems other than simple heat. The car kind of shuts itself down when the trans overheats so you quit beating on it. I guess that is why they don't fail road racing. Eventually road racers get bigger coolers and are fine.
