Painting your rims black...
Hey guys I want to keep my stock SS rims when I get my 2010 but I want to paint them black. Does anyone know how to do this or know of anywhere in San Antonio that does this for a good price? Let me know.

Powder coating the wheels would probably be the best combination of cost and durability in my opinion. I've considered it myself. I found that shops in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area were quoting $400-$800 to do a set of four. Try googling "powder coat wheels San Antonio" and I'm sure you'll find several. Ask to see some examples of their work. If they're good at it, they should jump at the chance to show it off.

Powder is the way to go. It should be fairly inexpensive being that the wheels are new and will not require much prep.

Also, powder coating offers huge choices in color and gloss. Durable too. Had some Ducati wheels done a few years back for for about $100 per wheel and they looked awesome.
If you paint them, they will look good right then, but I think you will be dissapointed very soon there after.

Just a note of Caution.
If planing on Powder coating over stock Painted rins. There is a chance of color leaching. Powder doated silver Axis Rims For my Truck in Black Pearl the silcer leached out and gave the finsh a Greenish tint. Had ti strip one rim now with 4-5 coats of powder real PIA. Now they are Wet Black Powder. |

I striped the Bad rim down to Alum. By myself $175 in striper and 1.5 week of soaking and scrubing; w/wire brush and scraper. (the striper is recyclable if any one needs some)
My work gets lots of parts power coated so as long as I used a color that they had it was Pro-Bono. Powder is purchased by the Pound Min. order is usualy 2-5 lbs depends on color. (if you are good you may able to get a sample pack usualy under 1lb) There are 3 basic types of powder each having its own propitys. Any will work. Note:this dose not include the New plastic powder. In my area I have heard of rims costing fron $75 to $150 per rim. Hint have then coat I/S & Out. My guy only did the Face. But I realy could not complain. Attached are pics of new back in 03 and from last year 08 after 5years on the Ride Notice the Red ring Faded. |
