Old "SS" Question...

Back in the day.......when I was barely a teenager, a friend and I used to debate what "SS" meant when we saw it on various GM vehicles. Come to think of it, did any other GM division other than Chevy have an "SS" derivative?.........Anyways...........

I used to always say it was SuperSport, as there were badges declaring such on cars like 67 Chevelles or Malibus, whatever the mid-size car was back then.

My friend stated it stood for SuperStock, as the car came from the factory, stock, all super..ish...

Okay, I am throwing this out to the all-knowing, all-caring forum.

Thanks.

Thinking about it again, maybe it should be SuperStock, as the Camaro SS comes with a lot more options, especially when you go 2SS, every option clicked.

I do think I saw a Cobalt SS, is that possible, and if so, why?

The SS, also known as Super Sport, was used (sometimes abused) on a wide variety of Chevrolet vehicles. Including, as you mentioned the Cobalt, which was available in a supercharged or turbocharged from (depending on the model year ).

Ok, SS has always stood for SUPER SPORT, and only Chevrolet vehicles used the SS badging.

Some of us are old enough to have owned a few of those old originals.

Op, you may be confusing the SS for SuperStock, as that was a drag race class where a lot of cars had SS for SuperStock either put on permanently or shoe-polished on the windows for the drags...

My very first SS was a new, dark blue, 1965 Chevy Impala SS, two door hardtop, a beautiful car at the time, and still is in my memory. And yes, SS stands for Super Sport, always has, always will. Go Chevy!
