Being an aeronautical engineer and a Camaro enthusiast, this is a marriage made in heaven for me. I wonder if they'd be upset if I tried that at the local airport?

U2
I saw the U2 take off and land everyday at U-tapao air base in Thailand(74-75). The chase car was a 454 El Camino. Two airmen would jump out of the back of the El Camino and secure the wheels under the wings, before the U2 tipped, as has been correctly described by others. Because the U2 was supposed to be top secret, it was required to attain an altitude of 1 mile before leaving the perimeter of U-tapao. To watch that sucker corkscrew up to altitude everyday, was definitely a trip. I will be making my first trip back to Thailand next spring since my USAF days there in '75.

I was stationed in Korea in the early 90's. We (Black Cats) used 5.0 Mustangs. It was fun beating on them when the pilots were doing "touch and go's". We sat at the end of the runway and waited for the planes on final approach and then try and get up to speed just behind the plane. The chase cars were used to let the pilot know how many feet off the ground till touchdown. They were replacing them with Camaros right after I came back stateside. Somewhere I have some Hi-8 video from inside the car.

Very cool but still not sure why! In this day and age, they can't have a camera and the instruments guide the pilot down! You would think that would be possible and a more exact thing1
just asking as not at all familiar to these! just curious! neufcruz

Interesting use for Camaros!
I searched and found nothing. Sorry if this is a repost.

The cars are driven by the pilots with another pilot in the passenger seat. The pilot in the passanger seat talks to the pilot in the aircraft to help guide them down the last few feet to the ground.
The length of the nose, especially depending on configuration, coupled with the aircrafts landing AOA makes it very difficult for the pilot to tell how far off the ground they are and their actual orientation with the mid runway. Beale used Camaros in 2008 when I was there for crossover training and Osan used GTOs while I was with the Blackcats from 2008 to 2009. |
