Any stolen 5th-Gens?
I'm looking into getting a Viper car alarm for my baby. If I do something, I do it right and therefore I'll be going all out on a system (kill switch, tilt defence, glass break, back-up battery, etc.) which will cost me $1000 installed.
I'm not 100% convinced I need this though. It would be nice but I'd rather spend the $1000 elsewhere if I could. I'm curious if any of my fellow C5ers have had their 5th-Gen stolen or have heard of any being stolen because I haven't. Granted, it's a new car but they've been on the road for over a year now. Thieves tend to target vehicles like Civics, minivans and pick up trucks. They also know how to disable OnStar. I'd like this thread to remain on topic and not turn into a debate about which alarm is best or what cars get stolen more, etc. I'm just interested in any intances of 5th-Gens being stolen. Thanks.

There was a recent thread about some one getting their car broken into, but the car itself wasn't stolen. He showed pics of the lock that was damaged. It seemed these cars are pretty easy to get into. If I come across the thread I'll post again.

sounds like a waste of money. everything i hear about chevys these days is that they are very hard to steal. and if somebody somehow gets into your camaro and starts it up they won't get far if you have the onstar

OnStar can be disabled from what I understand. I also feel like OnStar has a "Big Brother" quality.
Perhaps I will stick with OnStar. To be honest, I'm much more worried about my car being dinged or hit-n-run'd then I am stolen. And unfortunately there's no alarm system that can stop people from doing that. It'll just alert you to when the contact happens but by the time you get out to your car, the arse-hole is long gone. Still curious about any stolen 5th-Gens though.

Chevy's are extremely difficult to steal...4 years in law enforcement, I think I have come across maybe 2 and they were much older models.
With this Tap III (or whatever they call their key identifier) it is damn near impossible unless they actually have your key. Which an alarm will not do any good for anyways....as stated above, On star does a pretty dark good job

I don't recall any reports of the 5Gen getting stolen ... It seems to me it would take some pretty special tools to get around all the computer stuff to even get them started. Probably the easiest way to steal on would be by towing it ...

Total waste of money. Cars built these days are difficult for the average car thief to steal. The cars most frequently stolen in the US arent your Benzs, your beamers, your lexuses (Lexi? lol) or even your camaros or mustangs. They are the older hondas, toyotas and acuras. The japanese mid-class cars of the 80s and 90s have a) crappy or nonexistent theft deterent systems making them easy for the avg. thief to steal and b) been on the streets longer because they last. Since they have been around longer people who know how to steal them still know how to steal them and will steal them if the opportunity comes up.
Personally my car being stolen is the last thing I worry about. I just dont leave anything of value in the car and park near other more attractive cars. I dont use onstar because I live in a border city and if my car is stolen it will be in Mexico in about 5 min where onStar will not opperate.

Thiefs from what I understand will not steal sports cars they stick out to much espcially if you have. Bright color green yellow red so I say stick with onstar and use your 1000 for something else

The highest stolen car right now is a Cadillac Escalade. (which I believe has the same key system as Chevy).. How are they stealing it? I dont know, maybe they have keys, or they are towing it. But ANY car can be taken, alarm or not, if someone really wants it.

No one can break in and drive a Camaro away because you cannot start the engine without the key. That is why they use flatbed trucks to steal Camaros.
