High School grad needs a new car....
Well, not really. But it would be nice
I am making this post on behalf of my little brother. I know he should be making it, but the big brother in me cannot help it. My soon to be 18 year old brother (1 more month) had a great gift when he was 15. He was in a little bit of that young, raging hormones, who the hell am I, high school slump. I thought it may boost his confidence to get him a nice car, and discussed it with my dad, he agreed. In a day or two, with a check my dad wrote, I went and picked him up a red 2001 Z-28 off a used lot with 60K miles. Had the girlfriend drive it home. During this period, I had a red 2002 SS that was my daily driver. That little kid got off the bus thinking it was my car, and as he got closer realized it was different than my SS and wondered who's car it was. I came out and threw him the set of keys, and told him it was his Happy little fella he was. Thanks dad, you're the best pops. Well, he grew up to be quite the young man. He is it top physical shape, works out religiously. He went on the advanced track in highschool and went to the AP program which shared credits with the local bio science institute. He will graduate highschool with 66 college hours in the sciences, with a 3.9 GPA. He has never been in trouble, and has never had a speeding ticket or a wreck in his Z-28 and driving since the day he turned 16. He has modded it a little bit, but nothing serious. Only fender bender I remember was when he pulled in a little too far in the garage and dinged a little paint off the wall. No biggie really. No damage to his car, maybe a 4x4" area of paint off the wall. He will be attending UT austin or Texas A&M for his last 2 years than going to medical school. Hoping to see him enrolled as a med student at age 20 My dad was actually the first Texas A&M doctor, charter class of 81', first acceptance. Theres a lot of happiness in the family about this right now. As for me, im the lonely law student black sheep SO THE POINT OF MY THREAD He will be driving on either I-35 (yikes) or back country roads to TAMU. He needs a newer car with more airbags, more reliability, and better MPG. Parents are in talks about a new camaro. He wants to stay with the f-body, and he is a very good driver. WHAT I WANT TO KNOW Will a v6 LFX be a sufficient supplement for the V8 power he grew accustomed to with his LS1? I know the LS1 has more torque, but I figure with 323 horse or w/e, it still runs decent, right? AND LS v. LT guys .... any regrets getting the ls rather than the lt? Pat

Cool story. The v6 is awesome good on gas. But so is the SS. I guess it all comes down to how much you guys wanna pay.

No, if he enjoys the LS1's power he isn't going to get that same feeling from the LFX. But you know him better than us.

as a LFX owner, I can say it has plenty of power. I guess more is always better, but the 323 HP hasn't left me wanting. I can get up to the highest speed limits in 5 or 6 seconds, can keep up with any traffic, and as of yet I haven't been unable to pass somebody if I wanted to. I've yet to come across a single limitation where I found myself saying "damn, If only I'd got the V8". However, I don't go to tracks and race.
not to sound like an old fuddy duddy, but do keep in mind he's 18 yrs old, and seems to really be on the ball. might be better to play it safe. he is still just a kid. |

I am going to go a different direction with this...
If he is as responsible as you say... I have no reason not to believe you... and making the HUGE assumption money is not a issue... I would say go with the SS... and not because I am of the "my V8 rules and a V6 sucks"... not at all... becuase the kid has OBVIOUSLY made some GREAT accomplishments for his age, get him the SS. I am not taking ANYTHING away from a V6 so anyone reading this... if you are one of those Team LLT guys... just keep quiet. Thats my 2 cents and it has nothing to do with the power of the 8 over the 6... You asked about an LS -vs- LT... not much difference really... wheels and a few options. |

The LFX will surfice..............Its affordable, safe and fun, plenty of grunt, lower insurance premiums, decent fuel economy on regular grade pump gas, and a spare tire is available.........just in case. Tell him Kudo's on all the hard work and the V6 will get him where he's going plenty quick enough,,,,,,,,,,,,,to worry more now about completing his education, and before long he'll be tooling around in a ZL1.

He's not gonna like down grading to a v6. It's simple as that. It could have 800hp, and do a 8 sec standing mile, but it's still a v6 and its just not as cool as having the v8. Sorry v6 owners. Don't jump on me because I state the truth lol
