I Need HELP Selecting a Necklace/Chain

So here it is:
The holidays are upon us.
I want to purchase a necklace/chain for this woman I am seeing.
She carries her grandmother's wedding ring with her all the time, but it is too large on her fingers, and she doesn't want to get the ring resized.

So, what kind of chain, (metal type: Gold/silver/platinum/titanium)
Anything else I should know?

Assume a price point of $250 or less

White gold is always nice. What color is the ring?

The ring is yellow gold with a small diamond set into it.

My primary concern is that the chain be functionally strong enough to carry the ring without too much risk of breaking.

My secondary concern is that the chain look nice.

The ring in question is similar to this, except it is more feminine, and does not have the beveled edges.

I think if you go to a mall, they have several jewelers that will have many options for yellow gold chain necklaces within that price range. I think best you will find will be 14k gold necklaces which should be strong enough to hold the ring.

She is more likely to lose the ring on a necklace as opposed to having it properly sized for her finger.....reason I was asking about her not getting it sized?

there is a problem.....if you just put the ring on the chain, over time, it wears on the ring/chain....depending on which is harder (either the ring or the chain). so to truly preserve the ring, I would talk to a jeweler to find out the best way to attach it without wearing it out.

Yep. This is how my ex wife lost my high school class ring.
It was harder on me losing that ring than losing her......

The best way to attach it is on a finger.

you are correct.
She does not want to resize it because she wants to preserve it the way her grandmother wore it.

I will look into this, it seems to be very solid advice, thank you.

And thank you to all the other C5'rs who chimed in, I truly appreciate it.

If it means that much to her, and she does not want to resize it, you need to tell her to put it away.

It's a nice thought you have but that is asking for trouble.

His advice while seems logical really doesn't matter. 9 times out of 10 when a chain "breaks" it is the clasp that breaks or the O ring that connects the clasp to the chain.

This is good to know.
I am completely ignorant about jewelry in general.
