Im not going to sell you our car...

So I've been doing some sleuthing over the last couple of days, as there have been a significant amount of deliveries to dealerships over the 4th of July weekend. I come across a dealer that has a 2SS, IOM, Auto with everything I want on it, on their website for MSRP on the East Coast. I figure what the hell, I'll pay for shipping, I'll call and see if its a real price. Sure enough, they'll sell it to me for MSRP.

I tell the guy, great, let me give you a credit card to hold it for me, and we can start working on the paperwork... It all starting going downhill from there... Guy says, "Why don't you come in, and we'll take care of the paperwork?" I state, well, we'd have to the a majority of the signing over fax, and I can FedEx you the originals, if thats ok, since Im Seattle. Silence... I hear some muffles... Then the VP of the dealership comes on... "You said your in Seattle?" yes... "Im not going to sell it to you." Excuse me? "No, Im not going to loose my allocation to sell this car to someone out of state, I will only sell it to a XX resident."

Im blown away.... I pleaded with the guy. Told him there are no Camaros out west to buy, and that I'd be extremely grateful to purchase that one. He stated if I proved to him that Im not going to turn around and export it, or sell it on Ebay, that he'd consider it... He asked me to send my driver's license and 4 other forms of identification... So I did... But Im guessing I got snowballed to get off the phone with him...

Anyway... I would list the dealership, but Im still trying to work a deal with them. I have a transport ready to pick up the car this weekend, I have my finance check ready to FedEx... All these guys have to do is actually let me buy the car...

Basically, trying to buy a Camaro has been one of the worst car buying experience I have ever encountered. Either they're marked up a gazillion dollars, or if they're at MSRP... The dealer has to be some paranoid schizo.

He'll either sell it to you, or you'll post his info on here and have him marked as yet another scumbag car salesman to never deal with. It's in his best interest to be honest.

I hate to say it... but I almost kind of like this dealer. He's at least honest enough to not sell it to someone else who wants to rip off the consumer. Instead, he wants to sell it to a regular Joe @ MSRP.

He's not greedy, and he doesn't want the easy way out.

sounds like a dealer i'd buy from.........fly out and do the paperwork, then fly back............it all depends on how bad u want it.

but this doesn't sound like a deadbeat dealer to me. kudos to that dealer for not wanting anyone to buy it and rip off another consumer!

Sorry, don't see a problem here. He's doing the right thing and wants to win a long term local customer.

I think some of the responses are mistakenly thinking the OP is a dealer.

What would make anyone think the OP was trying to "ripoff the consumer"?

The dealer is probably being cautious as they may think the buyer could be a scam artist.

I agree with the dealer ( never thought I would say this) Having Camaros driving around your town is great marketing for the dealership. The dealer earned the allocation and it seems fair that he wants to keep it in town. I respect that fact that he is charging MSRP for the car and is looking out for his customers.

I underestand your frustration but look, buying a new car on the opposite coast from where you live and having it shipped is not exactly what you would call a normal purchase for a new car. The real answer is GM needs to get more Camaros out to dealers in volume so you don't have to deal with someone all the way across the country just to buy one of their cars. Just more poor planning on GM's part, creating another unhappy customer.

feel bad for you man, but I think im on the dealers side here. He was honest and selling for MSRP. Its in his interest to sell local, keep the customer and get the service for the car. Doesnt make much sense to send it across country unless he cant sell it at all.

I think the guy in Pennsylvania is doing the right thing, many dealerships are not. I live in a small town, and a nearby dealer has sent Camaros all over the country at a huge markup rather than sell them to the local Chevrolet loyalists.
