GM Heritage Center with Pics
Thanks to a very good friend, I had the opportunity recently to tour the GM Heritage Center. If you aren't familiar with it, the center is basically a museum for rare GM automobiles and related memorabilia. In some cases, the cars at the center are single surviving examples of cars that shaped the industry.
Last year, when it was announced that GM would be selling off some of the cars within its collection I was indifferent. In hindsight, as a step to keep the company alive it was the right move. However, after visiting the center it saddens me to know that a lot of very special cars had to be shed from the collection. As I walked through the facility and read the plagues that accompanied each car, I was struck with the imagination of designers of the 30s, 40s, 50s, etc, sitting down with paper and pencil drawing the concept cars that were sitting in front of me in the museum. No CAD. No computer. No fancy calculator to even assist. So a few people have asked me what car was my favorite in the collection. Wow. That is a hard question. I, of course, am partial to the Camaro so the concept car was a special one for me. The Buick concept car from 1938 (thought to perhaps be the first concept car) designed by Harley Earl was also right up there. So below are some pics of my favorites. There were just too many to pick just one. Enjoy. Last edited by Inspector 17; 10-01-2010 at 07:02 AM. |

Was there only one 5th Gen Camaro concept car? Just wondering, if that is the same one that we got to see at the 2006 All GM Nationals in Carlisle, PA. There's Scott Settlemire in the background.

2 weeks ago, Chevrolet conducted training on the Cruze
at the Heritage Center. It is truly incredible to view the history that is there. It's cool that you had the opportunity to view it, and post great pics! |

There was only one Camaro concept car that was displayed. The plague in front of the car did mention "Camaro Concept Cars" so I take it that there is more then one. I didn't look to see if the one in the picture had a "VIN" or any type of serial number.

I have been there too. I will have to look for my photos tonight when I get home. What many may not know is the displays change every now and then. GM brings many vehicles into the center and exchange them out. Every time you visit the center there could be a whole different set of things to see.

Awesome, Pete!!!
I've toured it several times and it looks like they've changed quite a few cars since the last time. It's always a treat. There are several warehouses nearby that hold most of the GM collection. Those are fun to poke your head in as well. Good pictures as well, thanks for sharing those. Oh and I wish you had let me know you were in town.
