Anybody have there door speakers replaced then experience water leaks inside the car?
I took my 2012 in for a water leak and they said it was from having my speakers replaced that the plastic barrier wasn't doing its job and charged me $167 to fix it.

Did you replace the speakers yourself? I haven't had my door apart yet but there's usually a plastic guard that goes behind the speaker that seals the inside of the door and the speaker from the elements. My guess is whoever installed your speaker hacked at the shield or didn't seal it back up when he was done.

had a shop do it...went there yesterday after the dealer and they gave me the runaround shifting the blame on the dealer not covering it under warranty cause i had aftermarket speakers. To me its the installers for not putting the sealer back properly. I know several people have replaced the door speakers themselves or at a shop and like to know if others had a water leak or even checked for leaks. I never would have noticed it if i wasnt looking in the back floor.

Sorry to hear.

I'm not a mechanic, but installing new speakers is something even my wife could do with proper instructions. You know what they say about wanting something done right...

I installed my speakers myself but I was very careful when I pulled the moisture barrier up. I peeled it back slowly so I didn't rip the vinyl barrier or mess up the goo that attaches it to the door. I made sure it was firmly attached to the door again when I put it back together. I've done speakers and sound deadening projects in lots of vehicles and I've never had a water leak problem.

I see a few options for you at this point:

1) Get some heavy duty, high-temperature, all weather duct tape and just tape the tear or edge that isn't sealing to the door. It isn't pretty but it should hold up OK. I did this in my last vehicle and it held up for 8+ years in temps below freezing and 120+ degrees.

2) Replace the moisture barrier with Dynamat. Rip the moisture barrier off and stick the Dynamat in its place. This will seal the door, give you more bass & better sound from your speakers, and reduce some road noise. For about $55 you can a Dynamat Door kit on Amazon. That would probably be enough to replace both moisture barriers. I did this in my wife's car and it has been completely trouble free for the last few years.

3) Let the dealer replace the moisture barrier.

I already did option 3, but feel the shop that did the install should be responsible for some if not all the $167 dealer cost.

I don't know how they could have damaged the moisture barrier, that thing is very tough.

In my experience most auto shops (that focus on car audio and upgrades) tend to rip their customers off regularly, **** up installs, etc.

The best thing to do is find reviews for a shop, get to know the owner/workers, etc. Befriend them. Once you befriend them, they will treat your car a lot of times better than others.

For the shop to argue that the dealer should've covered it under warranty is asinine. I would've immediately said my warranty should NOT NEED to be utilized due to an error on the SHOP's end.

At this point I would politely ask them to pay for 50% of the bill with a check made payable to you directly. If they refuse, explain that they lost your service and you will file a report with both the BBB and leave negative reviews everywhere online. If they don't act, cut your losses and file the reports. **** that shop.

I replaced my door speakers and I had no issues with any barrier, as a matter of fact you just simply take off one screw and out they come. Then you install new speakers with GM adaptor and they fit right int he stock position. Didnt even touch the plastic barrier.. Panel just unscrews and pops out. So I dont know why you would even have a water problem.. But who knows what they did.. Sorry..

If you use component speakers with a crossover, then there is a bit more to it than that. And you have to get the wiring through the barrier, so that the crossover is protected from the elements.

When I installed my speakers, I stuck the crossover to the outside metal of the door with double sided tape. I did this through the speaker hole that is existing in the weather barrier. Then ran my wires through the existing molded grommet. I did have to slit the grommet to make room for the extra wires and electrical taped it. Been installed for over a year and no problems. If a stereo knob like me can do it, surly a stereo tech should be able to do it.

ahh so you wouldnt be placing them on the OE location?

There isn't an OE crossover, so there isn't an OE location. The mids and tweets still go in the OE location.
