What is boosting?
Lol as you can tell by the question.... im a powertrain noob... but what is it?
Do I HAVE to get a supercharger or turbo? How expensive is it? How much boost can our engines take?

yes it is expensive, 6-7 thousand might get you into a very base setup. stay under 10lbs of boost on stock engine but that is the high limit IMO.

Im asking because a Civic driver and me were talking when I got off work, I said something about a turbo, and he said, " Why dont you just boost it?" .... so I am just curious. We got a couple people at school with build Hondas that are running like 15 and 20lb of boost... so I dont wanna be left in the dust with a 38k Camaro that gets beat by Hondas

You are 16 and have a 38K Camaro? I think during my youth I was the one left in the dust!
Just start reading threads in this forum, in a few hours you will learn a ton.

Different engines can hold different pounds of boost. Also depends how its built, how its tuned....etc. I had an HHR SS a few years ago that was on a 28 lb boost tune....pretty quick for a 2.0.

First things first, welcome, and congrats on the car.
Now, boosting is the act of forcing more air into the engine (cylinders) than would happen naturally. This extra air creates a higher pressure inside the cylinders, or a "boost" in pressure. Hence the terms, boosting, forced induction (FI), and naturally aspirated (N/A). Two ways to boost, turbos and superchargers, and we won't get into details on the differences yet. As someone said above, it will require one of the two, it will be expensive, and 10psi of boost with a proper tune can work fine in the SS. As for a Honda making more boost, you need to know that boost pressure alone is no real measure of power output, there are many other things to consider. |

But the guy said he is "Blowing the doors off a Roush Mustang..." So I'd think if he isnt lieing, he must be around 450-500hp in that car. Its very light also... When the streetfights (legal civilian drag racing season) comes around, I'll see what he runs in a 1/4 mile. I'm gonna estimate from what he says, its gonna be around 11.6-12.3 sec run. What is the cheapest way to get a stock LS3 to 12.5 sec? I cant use nitrous, or something that is gonna cost me thousands.... im only 16. But, im really not a bad driver, I can handle my car very well. I was raised and trained on a high end V8s. Im ok for a little more power. So preferably dont say I cant handle it. But whats the best route for a 12.5.. or even just a 13 flat?

You can get a stock ls3 below 12.5 with just bolt ons if you know how to drive it
And the ls3 does high 12's stock. But like I said you have to know how to launch and shift

Headers, CAI and exhaust is a given. What else would it take?
