my understanding is it is painted carbon fiber but that is just what I read somewhere.

The HOOD itself is painted Aluminum with a single hydraulic lift strut on the passenger side. The hood's extractor insert/element is Carbon Fibre. It is offered in two formats: Painted & "optional" Exposed Weave/clear coat. You can WAX the clearcoat, but if you get any WAX on the painted surface... it will look like crap unless you get a compound specifically designed for this "dull" matte finish.

I think what I am seeing in these photos is the vents might be seperate from the actual insert itself. Insense that they might be a plastic.

Lets be honest, the insert isn't a load bearing component... it therefore could be plain plastic without any CF! It's only for the looks!

Yes, the vents are plastic. All inserts are carbon fiber. One painted the matt black finish, the other exposed and clear coated. There has been some discussion about whether or not the insert will still be matt black or body color if you get a stripe delete.
