Gasoline with 10% ethanol now 87 Octane?
Hello,Has anyone else noticed that super unleaded gas with 10% ethanol is now 87 octane? That is the same octane as regular gas. I'm in IA and the 10% ethanol gas used to be 89. Anyone know of a reason for this?

It's been like this for years. Most stations have up to 10% ethanol on all gas. I have yet to see in person a station that isn't 10% ethanol at any octane.

Super unleaded octane varies by locality. It's 92 or 93 here in south GA, and 94 at certain stations. Up in high elevation, its usually 87 or 89.

I found many stations in Denver that don't have ethanol. Love taking road trips up there. The car feels so much better.

Stations in my neck of the woods (~5000ft ASL) have 10% ethanol in regular and super, but premium is ethanol free. But a couple stations have ethanol free reg and super...at a higher cost.

That sounds very low for super unleaded. The altitude of Ames Iowa is only about 1000 ft, so the air isn't going to be too much thinner than at sea level. The only other thing I can think of is that they aren't taking the ethanol into account when giving the octane rating (pure ethanol has an octane rating of 99). Even then, that wouldn't get it close to the octane that is normal for 'super' gasoline.

That does seem awfully low for that area. Even at my altitude the grades are 85.5, 87, 89, and 91.

I actually found the answer to my own question while browsing my local news station website.http://www.kcci.com/news/central-iow...index.htmlThat kind of sucks because I like using the 89 octane as it was cheaper than the 87 and a higher octane.

Here: regular = 87 (pure), super = 89 (E10), premium = 91 (pure), super premium = 93 (E10).
Interestingly enough, 89 super used to be cheaper than 87 regular. They have recently reversed that price structure. Funny enough, it's never been announced. I have no doubt in my mind that people are still pumping super thinking that they're getting the cheapest gas.
