Joy of living in California

To be a performance car enthusiast in California, or any state with smog regulations for that matter, is very difficult. It is frustrating having to deal with smog checks. Today it was by far the worst. On my way to school I was “randomly” selected to have a free roadside smog test performed on my car. First, I don't want people crawling in and out of my car, let alone having the test done.

I was lucky enough to pass emissions portion, but they hassled me about my intake. It does not have a smog sticker.

If you are going to do this, I believe you should be looking for cars that are a piece driving on the roads, they will have terrible emissions best bet. They are probably unsafe to be on the road anyway. Not a 2014 car that someone just added a few mods to.

DMV/ License checkpoints are good, but this is just frustrating.

Anyone else ever have to deal with this?

WTF? Where was this? I've never seen one.

You could have just said no. California law does not require a new vehicle to be smoged until 7 years have passed.

Anytime someone says they had their car "smogged" I know they are from California. I'm glad Texas doesn't have such ridiculous regulations.

Article says it's voluntary. Did CHP force you to test?

It was defiantly not voluntary. They must be able to use the excuse of probable cause. Since you can hear my car.

I'd give them the finger and say "i decline your selection!"

"The smog tests, run by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), are technically voluntary, but with the fanfare and presence of highway patrolmen flagging people down, it does not come off that way to many drivers."

But i guess i would get pulled to the side for tinted windows, no front plate, etc.. etc..

When you're pulled over by a bunch of cops who knows it's voluntary? I'm sure they don't mention that it's voluntary and you don't have to do it. Most people are scared and intimidated.

It's just like when you get pulled over and the cop asks where you're going or what are you doing, you don't have to answer but we all know how that goes.

It's flat, but I love it here. No state income tax, diverse cultures all playing well together, real estate is way cheaper than California and of course, southern women are some of the best looking in the world! The only drawback as far as I'm concerned is the summertime heat. I freaking hate it.
