Gas Prices? Slow Economy? Who Cares? V8 Chevy Camaros Selling Out Quickly

Apparently, rumors of the death of the American muscle car have been greatly exaggerated.

Autoblog reports, "Chevrolet has reportedly taken more than 6,000 orders for its new Camaro so far," before the first one has reached showrooms, "and why not? The car is great looking, excitement is high, and fuel prices have eased up a bit." More remarkably, "84% of orders have been for V8-powered SS models so far."

At the Camaro's rollout in July, GM worked hard to reassure the press that the car would be available in a more fuel-efficient V6 edition that didn't sacrifice much performance.

Apparently, buyers tuned that news out, dreaming of the rumble of a small-block V8. Now, Motor Authority reports, GM is "warning its dealers that they will have to prepare their customers for the fact that Chevrolet won't be making 84% of its Camaros in the SS trim." Customers may be disappointed to learn that the V8 will be hard to find.

Apparently, we've all be underestimating that V8 lust. AutoWeek notes that the buyer who ordered the third Camaro SS to roll off the assembly line has already sold the car on eBay before it has even been delivered. The winning bid? A whopping $73,000 (shipping not included).

im tired of car companies focusing on mpg,gas milelage etc.thats all people ever worry about these days whatever happened to having the fastest car on the streets?man the hell with buying an uncool car like a ford honda or toyota with these ugly cars you sacrifice horsepower, speed and your reputation by buying these so called gas savers. i have a 2001 monte carlo ss and i get great gas milelage plus this car is a car chickz really dig! i wouldnt be found dead in a focus civic or prius these cars suck really i dont care if gas prices continue to rise i will still drive a camaro ss or trans am ws6 or even a charger srt8 but never, never will i buy a ford toyota, honda, subaru, volkswagon etc im all american muscle car status the 60's 70's & 80's were the coolest years the muscle car era when you had to go hard or go home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure the V8 Camaro's are selling out fast, but what I'm wondering is for how long? I'm very surprised that 84% of the Camaros sold were the V8 models. I hopw by the time I'm 20 I can get an SS.

Me too. Well right now with the way the economy and the market is gas is cheap. Heck I'm looking into getting something with a V8 for my next ride in the next couple of months to take advantage of the poor economic conditions...

You'll be able to get an SS. They'll be out there. Especially after all the hype is over. Yeah majority of Camaros that will be sitting on the lots probably will be V6's but there should be a decent amount of SS's out there...

If 84% of the orders are v8 and they're not going to make 84% of first bunch v8, then they're stupid and deserve to go out of business.

Same here If you're so god danm concered about the mpg then buy yourself a cobalt ss or an hhr ss as much as gm is tring to get the best mpg on the camaro, its still a v8 and why don't they talk about how the car has so many features and so much power and so much gadgets inside and under the car, the camaro has a hell load more than the competition has and they don't state much of that, those magazines need to get their heads off the mpg topic for a while.

It isn't too surprising that 84% of preorders are for the SS. It is the enthusiasts who are doing all the pre-ordering, and they're the ones who will buy the SS. Joe Consumer doesn't pre-order cars. When he wants/needs one, he goes to the dealership and buys what is there, maybe dealer trading for the exact one he wants if that is possible. Joe Consumer is also much more likely to buy the LS and LT.
