Google junkyard turbo builds or something similar. There are entire sites dedicated putting turbos on using parts from other turbo vehicles. There are all kinds of junk turbos out there from diesels to ricers. If you're going to engineer you're own kit, you have a lot of reading to do.

You need to figure out how to build the hot side (turning manifolds around so they exit to the front and running the exhaust to the turbo is common), cold side (are you gong to use and intercooler), fuel maps and injectors, waste gates and blow off valves. There is a lot to it.

If it's a sohc 4.0 then explorer express makes a PD blower kit for them. Its based off the Eaton m90.

You could get away with a 50 or 75 shot with a tune on the stock engine no problem. I wouldn't go any higher though.

IF you are unsure if you can bend pipes up to "make your own turbo," and if you've never "bent pipes up to make your own turbo," I'd say it's probably not something worth serious consideration.

You wanna turbo your ranger and dont even know what engine it has? no wonder the ford guys went rough on you. If you do in fact have the 3.0l, dont even bother trying to make it fast, that motor is tank-like reliable and cheap to maintain but horsepowerwise dont waste your money. Best way to make a ranger fast is to swap an old pushrod 5.0 into it. Google the swap and get the info you need

The DOHC 4.6 will fit in the Ranger's engine bay as well.

If your replacing the engine, put in a 5.3 LS combo with a turbo. That will piss the Ford guys off.

Or a 6.1 HEMI...or a 2jz...or a VQ35DE...or a 13B-REW.

That'd show...everyone.

Not sure what the cost is on those, but turboing a 5.3 is pretty cheap and it's an LS engine (GM like the Camaro, oh never mind). Put a 4l80e out of a truck behind it and your ready to go.
