V6 Oil Burn
I remember a while back we were talking about the CTS DI 3.6 and how it burned oil a little. Just wondering if anyone with the V6 has noticed this at all or if it is something that they appear to have fixed already.

oil burn
I too am interested. Anyone with the V6 using oil in theirs? I'd say a quart in 3k is normal?
Anyone?

During the break in process, it is normal for any engine to burn oil.
I could elaborate, but the process is completely normal/harmless. Expect to see this up to 3-5000 miles.

I understand that it is normal, the question was based on the fact that the 3.6 in the CTS was still burning oil at 15k. It isn't something that is gonna stop me from buying the car, just a question as to if the issue has been solved.

Bump...
I am seeing a lot of black soot in the exhaust tips. Is this from burning oil or normal? Will it stop?

That's from running rich at times. My mom's 2005 Acura RL did that too...Honda insisted that it's normal for that car, and GM will probably do the same for the Camaro.

My 08 CTS with the 3.6 DI did burn oil, it was about 1/2 a quart between oil changes every 6k miles. The quicklube tech pointed it out when I got my first oil change after that I checked it every month just to be sure i wasnt running her dry. I never had any mechanical problems with the car, it just used a bit of oil.

Good to know. Thanks. I'll just keep an eye on it and keep the tips cleaned up.

I just hit 10K miles on my v6 camaro. It has 30% oil life left. I went to check the oil and the dip stick was bone dry. I had checked it when the oil change was first done, and it was full. So mine burns A LOT. It's going in to the dealer today.

You need to be looking at the white portion of your spark plugs, not the exhaust tips. On a proper running engine, the plugs should look like they just came out of the box or very slight tan color.

Ok... so if a motor is burning any oil at all wouldn't that indicate piston ring blow by or some type of engine leakage whether internal or external?? I'm not an engineer but to me there are only two ways for an engine to loose oil 1, leakage through faulty gasket seating or 2, faulty engine break in procedures causing piston rings not to seat properly to the cylinder wall....thereby causing engine blow by when internal pressures exceed the rings capability to hold that pressure.
