It would be nice to know someone who has a L99 and the Outlaw for me to take a drive in, but that's unlikey to happen. I feel like I should get the LS3 just to avoid the 4 cylinder AFM crap, but this Camaro would be my daily driver. Decisions decisions

"Shifting errors"? You mean like when I forget to put the car in a forward gear, or when I forgot the let the clutch back out after hitting 4rd? Or you do you mean like when you forget to hit 2nd and go right to 3rd? I hate it when I do that... Kills my times.

The last two posts have been fantastic.... best part is most all of us here are modified. So the comparision is garbage or referencing a stock L99. Weird that we yet again have to justify differences between fellow Camaro owners... how do all of you keep managing to sit in such a way that a stick gets lodged that tight?

its been proven, a stock LS3 is little faster than a stock l99. but of course a l99 can be made to beat Ls3s all day. |

It would be easier to answer your question if we knew your intentions.
The difference, as was stated, is the AFM (formerly known as DOD, or dispoacement on demand) where 4 cylinders shut down at low load. The L99 is lower in compression due to the cupped pistonheads and VVT cam. As a result is 26 bhp less than the LS3. (400-L99 and 426-LS3) However the L99 is geared differently in the rear end so it makes up for it. Tests as faster 0-60 by a tenth or so yet slower in the quarter mile by a tenth or so. The gears being key. If you plan on modding then there are more immediate gains to be had with the L99. A cam swap can get you bigger gains with the same cam. You'll get most of your initial 26 lost bph back plus the normal gain. So with an equal cam you are actually a tad faster. But that's modding. It goes any direction from there. It all depends on what you are planning to do. The stock LS3 will 'FEEL' quicker but it really isn't. So it all depends on what you want. Want to beat that Mustang to the next light? Go L99. Want to beat him on a road course, go LS3. Quote:

I compare them by the average of the cars. Most of the magazines and tests agreed that the L99 was a tenth qucker 0-60 but slower in the quarter mile. Due to the rear end gears I assume. |

I believe I can! At least I hope. I am scared of the potential drone that may lie in the L99. Idk if you would want me to ride in your Camaro... I am a Cowboy fan Although I wouldn't mind meeting you at CFIII!
I think you'll find that someone close to you would be perfectly willing to meet you. Especially if you are a Sooners fan...... I would be, but I"m anything but stock anymore and I don't live there. lol [/QUOTE] |

It's hard for me to be objective anymore. I've done so much. And defended the L99 guys on the strip. |

I would say that stock to stock or mod for mod, the auto will beat the manual 9 out ot 10 times in the 1/4 mile. Shifting a manual is fun, but not necessarily faster.

L99 has a lower 1st gear than the LS3 to jump off the line.
