Buick-GMC to Introduce Nine New Models in Next 12 Months

Nine New Models in Next 12 Months for Buick and GMC
General Motors

September 20, 2012

DETROIT – Buick and GMC told dealers today that it will introduce nine new or significantly updated models in the next 12 months, starting with the new Buick Enclave luxury crossover SUV and GMC Acadia crossover SUV this fall.

The new Buick Encore small luxury crossover, which will be priced at $24,950 including a $750 destination charge, arrives in early 2013. A Buick Regal luxury sport sedan, Buick LaCrosse luxury sedan, GMC Sierra and Sierra HD full-size pickups, as well as GMC Yukon and Yukon XL full-size SUVs will arrive next year.

In addition to these nine models, GMC will offer luxury-appointed Denali versions of its four upcoming vehicles and a new 2.0L turbocharged powertrain will be available in the Buick Verano this year.

By the end of 2013, the oldest non-commercial models in a Buick/GMC showroom will be the Buick Verano luxury sedan and GMC Terrain small SUV. Verano has been in dealer showrooms for less than a year and has gained sales volume every month since launch. Terrain arrived as a 2010 model and is on pace for its best sales year ever in 2012. A new Denali luxury trim level recently was added.

GMC also announced the return of the GMC Canyon midsize pickup as an all-new model to be built in Wentzville, Mo. Arrival timing will be announced later.

“While we continue to make strong progress in fuel economy gains on our full-size trucks, we know that there is a group of customers who want the functionality of a truck but may not need full-size pickup,” said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick and GMC Marketing. “We believe that introducing a new, agile and efficient mid-size Canyon will meet the needs of many pickup buyers.”

Buick and GMC have grown together as distinctly different but complementary brands. Together, they have sold more than 400,000 vehicles so far this year, a pace that should allow each brand to achieve a third consecutive year of sales gains.

“We’re not only selling more vehicles, we’re bringing new customers to the Buick and GMC showroom,” said Brian Sweeney, vice president of Buick and GMC Sales and Service. “Both brands report more than 40 percent conquest sales. Buick was the only automotive brand in the United States to reduce the average age of its buyer during the past five years, and GMC continues to attract more female buyers and – with Denali vehicles – more import and luxury owners.

Overall, General Motors will have 70 percent all-new or significantly refreshed products across its four U.S. brands in 2012-2013.

Very cool. Can't wait to see the new midsize Colorado and Canyon's when they arrive and find out what they offer.

I just hope the Canyon looks better than the Malibu-look-a-like Colorado that we are supposed to be getting. I hear these trucks may not be available yet for a few years, so hopefully that means they can change the looks of the Colorado while they are at it. Otherwise that truck's styling is going to feel old already by the time it arrives (we've been seeing photos and info on this truck for nearly 2 years already it seems) and again...its soft car-like front end is a turn off for me.

Glad to see it! Too many options poses the same issues GM faced before.

They are going to shoot themselves in the foot again. Too many competing models within their own family. Bailout #2 in 3.....2.....1....

It's getting a much-needed MCE along with the Insignia.

The only vehicles that even vaguely compete with each other are Chevrolet/GMC trucks. And GM makes a killing on trucks, so that's not even an issue.

FYI

Powertrain Innovation Comes Standard on 2013 Regal

Standard eAssist, optional turbocharging continue forward-thinking powertrain approach
The 2013 Buick Regal luxury sport sedan arrives at dealerships this fall with a standard advanced eAssist
powertrain. Two powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines give Regal one of the most technologically
advanced engine ranges in the brand’s history.
“With eAssist, Buick is redefining what a ‘conventional powertrain’ means to customers,” said eAssist
global chief engineer Stephen Poulos. “It changes the fuel economy – but not the experience – for the 97
percent of new car buyers who aren’t buying hybrids.”
Where a hybrid vehicle requires a complex system of large, heavy batteries and electric motors, Buick
eAssist uses a compact lithium-ion battery and a small electric motor/generator in place of an alternator to
achieve an EPA-estimated 36 highway mpg for both the Regal and the LaCrosse luxury sedans.
The three main advantages of the eAssist system are its stop/start functionality, which turns the engine
off when the vehicle is at rest; regenerative braking that gathers and stores energy that would otherwise
be lost during braking, and an electric motor assist that reduces the gas engine’s work during acceleration
or on inclines.
Buyers interested in more acceleration can choose from a no-cost option of a 220-horsepower, 2.0L
turbocharged Ecotec engine or the 270-hp Regal GS, both with variable valve timing and direct injection.
In
addition to one of the most power-dense engines ever certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers, the
GS offers high-performance Brembo brakes, HiPer strut suspension technology and unique design cues
inside and out.
Both Regal Turbo and Regal GS are offered with automatic or manual transmissions; Regal with eAssist is
available exclusively with a six-speed automatic.
The Buick Regal name, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2013, is a powertrain innovation
pioneer. In 1975, it was the only mid-size vehicle in the United States to
forego a standard V-8 engine for a more efficient V-6, while
remaining competitive in performance. Three years later, the
Regal employed a turbocharger.
Today’s Buick Regal combines sport sedan handling with
intelligent powertrain technologies. Regal with eAssist
offers five more highway mpg than an Acura TSX and six
more than a Volvo S60, while the Regal Turbo and Regal GS
offer more power than turbocharged four-cylinder engines
from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen.

Where is the need for a Chevy truck and a GMC truck? What's the real difference? Ford gets away with only selling one model truck and it still outsells every GM truck. Heck, it's outsold every vehicle ever produced.

When GM talked about restructuring I assumed part of that was streamlining.

Toyota-Lexus
Ford-Lincoln
Nissan-Infinity
Chevy-Buick-GMC-Cadillac
IMHO- they don't need all four when two will do. They have the everyday brand (Chevy) and luxury brand (Cadillac).

They appeal to different demographics for one. Also, the F-series has been outsold by the GMT-900s numerous times. The GMT-900s are just super old in the tooth by this point.

And the bottom line: Profit. Like I said, GM makes a killing on trucks. So again, not an issue.

GM went from Chevrolet, Saturn, Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Hummer, Saab, and Cadillac to Chevrolet, Buick-GMC, and Cadillac. That's streamlined enough. Considering how the Buick-GMC sales channel has a 40% conquest rate and high ATP, plus Buick's unbridled success in China, there's really no reason for GM to fold it. It practically pays for itself.
