gas tank problems

This is the seceond time my check engine light came on the first time nothing happened and they told me it may never happen again keep a eye on my gas gauge. well, everything has been fine for two months and then my gas gauge was going crazy and check engine light came on. of couse I have a full tank of gas and have to wait till it goes down. but, they said it's the senor in the gas tank and they have to pull the tank to replace. I have 30,200 miles and have had my car for a little over 2 yrs. and everything has been great other then the whooping sound I get every once in awhile. Will let you know what happens. Milissa

Are you tightening the gas cap until you hear a click? It seems like a silly question but a few people have had CELs come on when they didn't tighten it all the way.

We've been though that. This is a sensor in the tank because the gas gauge goes crazy. emtpy to full back to empty when the tank is full. It's going in Thursday for them to pull the tank. I had to wait till my tank was empty.

Yeah , what the hell is that crap, sounds like a pump having issues or something, or maybe it's our cars preparing for Halloween.

The fuel module has a level sender with resistor card on it. A good Techron fuel cleaner may fix it up, its worth a try as you burn out this tank.

Well, I took my car in today and it's the gas level sensor. I have to wait till tomorrow for the part to come in.:( I just hope that this is really it. He told me because it started acting normal again it makes it harder to figure out. but, what it's doing with the gas gauage he thinks this will fix it. We'll see

Mine was doing the same thing fuel gauge would show 1/4 to 1/2 even when full and then it would drop to empty, then the Check Engine Light came on, took the car in last Saturday Dec. 10, 2011 sure enough bad fuel sensor but then the part was on back order but came in Thursday Dec-15, 2011 dealer said may be ready by Monday Dec. 19 or the 20th, 2011

I now this is an old thread and this happened to an SS, but I just had this happen yesterday to mine. I had a full tank of gas and I was driving for about 30 minutes when I noticed the fuel guage was on empty. The check engine light never came on though, and after about an hour it came off 'E'? I have less the 30,000. Anyone else had this happen, beside the OP?
