windshield replacement with aftermarket glass

How many here had their windshield replaced with aftermarket glass. Any issues. I have a crack in my windshield and the insurance is offering me Safelite replacement.

Demand OEM replacement!

If you have a HUD they have to give you OEM.

Safelite is Satan's taint.

Seriously. The guy who came out to fix the windshield in my Camaro was a slob and set his tools all over my hood without putting anything down, including his personal cell phone, which I almost chucked across the parking garage when I saw it. The car was brand new. Black paint.

I try not to be judgemental on one bad encounter, but then they came to replace a windshield in our Jeep, and 4 visits later, it still leaks air. I think I'm going to just pay another company to do re-do it.

Don't use Safelite!!! Insurance companies love them because they're cheap. They're cheap for a reason!

You have the right to choose your own glass company. Call a local high-end car dealership (Lexus, BMW, Mercedes... something of the like) and ask who they use and recommend for auto glass replacement.

OE glass is almost always a necessity for HUD equipped cars. If you didn't have HUD, I'd recommend that Pilkington glass is who Chevrolet usually uses for their glass.

I have had two broken windshields in the year and a half that i have had my 1LE. I couldn't imagine not putting OEM in such nice a car.

Had my windshield replaced the second week I owned the car. Originally the insurance folks wanted me to schedule with Safelite, but as I had some pretty sever time constraints, I wound up going with someone who only used OEM replacement glass, as they were the only place that had an oppen installation window in the time frame that was relevant.

My insurance was pretty accommodating about that.

Essentially, it's a negotiation. They start with what they'd like, you respond with what you'd like, and usually you'll meet somewhere in the middle.

I've read many comments on SafeLite. Some good, some bad.
Personally they've replaced 3 windshields for me.
Every one had to be redone.

BTW, insurance cannot dictate who does your repairs. That's YOUR decision!

It's not always a negotiation - It's going to depend on how the insurance policy reads. Some policies stipulate that aftermarket glass must be used if it is available.

I don't think all aftermarket glass is bad. But I'd fight to have OE glass put in it, if there's a chance.

As in my case, it's the quality of install that mattered. Definitely got the soup sandwich treatment from Safelite.

Does anyone know whether the Camaro OEM windshield is "acoustic" glass? My previous GM car, a Cruze, made a big deal about the acoustic windshield and that any replacement should also be acoustic. I think there is a layer of sound deadening in the acoustic type.

Just had my windshield replaced not 3 hours ago. (Hint...when changing the wiper blades, do NOT let the metal arm slam down from the fully extended position). It wasn't done by the 'S' people and everything seemed to go great. Glass says Pilkington made in Canada instead of GM, but looks identical and probably the same manufacture of GM labeled products.
