SS lost its crown to Z28?

I searched and didn't find any info on this question. So any way hasn't then SS always been the superior vehicle when it comes the SS, Z28? Why the role reversal for 2012?

I thought the same thing. but I attribute it to the fact that chevy kinda beat the whole SS thing to death by giving EVERYTHING they make an SS model, the Z28 sounds special so it'll sound cooler to the NON camaro obsessors that want a car that looks good and eats mustangs.

I always thought the Z28 was an upgrade over the SS.

Wasn't the Z28 from generations past supposed to be considered the track star of the lineup? Whereas the SS was the dragster? Or am I just completely off base? lol

well as far as I know at least for the 4th Gens, the SS was the nicer of the two, but as far as I know HISTORICALLY the SS was made for raw power while the Z28 was always aimed for better handling.

Silverado SS, Cobalt SS, HHR SS.....

Probably looked better on a powerpoint presentation to have a consistent naming strategy.

Gen 1 may also play a factor. Wasn't there the V8 SS/RS back then, and the Z had the badass motor?

back in the 1st and 2nd Gens I think that RS actually had different stuff than the SS, but I could be wrong. i do remember reading that the 1st Gen SS was made more for drag racing while the Z had better handling and was more aimed at track driving.

Actually for the first gens, the Z28 was over the SS. Since the 5th gen is based on the first gen this only makes sense.

As for the other gens neither was superior to the other, they was equals. The SS and Z28 was just set up differently for different purposes. The SS was set up for the 1/4 mile and would beat the Z28 almost every time while the Z28 was set up for the track and would beat the SS almost every time.

Not true for 4th gens... All V8's were Z28's (like SS models today). The 4th gen SS models started out as Z28's and were sent to SLP for conversion to SS. The SS had suspension enhancements and more power...

Wait I thaught the in the first gens the SS had the 350 and the Z28 had a 302. Maybe I was misunderstanding it.

according to firstgencamaro.com. The 302 was the only engine available in the first-generation Z-28.
