A funny story. My cousin relocated to the DC area and lives with my mom there. She was there for roughly 6-8 months and already has a GS job. I don't remember what she was hired for but she's in! My mom is a GS 13 working for FEMA. My wife and I have been applying for these types of positions for years and nothing has come of it. I figured either we are doing something wrong or just don't know the right people.! Neither myself or my wife have prior military experience, so leaves out veterans preference.

GS jobs are everywhere in DC. The government is the largest employer there, actually everywhere, I believe. Good luck in your journey. I have sorta paused in my search. The company I work for is seeking renewal next year. June 2014 the current contract expires. The veterans preference hasn't made a difference for me, maybe the disabled vet preference will.

If you are looking for one in the Air Force take a break they implemented a hiring freeze last Friday. If you are applying for GS positions get the job series. I am a 1670 Equipment Specialist with the AF. Do a search for a Core Document on it and try to match your Resume to the core doc. Most resumes are run thru a computer that searches for the KEY WORDS. Good luck, next time you find one drop me an IM with the Job series I will see if I can find you a core doc..

Also what type job are you looking for Speciality?

Look at the job description for "key words" that should be included in your resume.

I honestly don't have anything in particlar that I have been looking for. Really just trying to get my foot in the door. I haven't been able to find anything that matches the type of degree that I have. But I'l look in to the Core documents like you suggested.

I think for me it is. I'm pretty sure I'm past the cutoff for some branches. I'll be 30 in March.

I disagree. The vast majority of Gov't jobs do not require a clearance. One thing I recommend is to ALWAYS check the box that says you are willing to work Part-time (even if you're really not) and to ALWAYS say you are willing to relocate (even if you are not). My ex-wife worked in HRO and she said those two things will often get your resume/application canned right away if you say "No" to them. Now-a-days, your application goes into a huge nation-wide (and possibly world-wide) database and front-line screeners don't like to see those "Noes".

Just a suggestion. You can always turn the job down.

One other thing... a Federal Gov't job is not nearly as desireable as it used to be. Our current Gov't situation is inspiring all sorts of diminishing benefits - unless you can get into Congress, of course.

Now that you mention it, my mom is a GS13 and she doesn't have a clearance... And you make a lot of good points.

I don't want to knock the military whatsoever. I do not believe it is for me. I've got the utmost respect for all branches. My dad served in he Navy. Did his 30 and got out. Same with my father-in-law. I even took the general aptitude test. I was considering either Air Force or Army. It just didn't pan out.
