Sad thing is I know the guy is wrong, but I can't put it into a simple explanation.

Or you can do like the Corvette and start with a structure so good that when you put a targa or vert on it, it simply is indistinguishable. I think the vette is less than a 1 Hz difference coupe to convertible. Look at the underbody of the Camaro convertible. Those braces are a big part of the weight. But if you didn't allow for space for those braces in the original design, you are "stuck". Not so much a lack of expertise. You just have to make compromises for cost, mass, investment and packaging space. If you have the $$$ then you can add unobtanium braces which are miraculously infinitely stiff. But if you din't allow the space for the bracing or the optimal points on the body to attach them you get a less than optimal solution. But from experience, you are better off planning for a convertible from the begining than to try to do it after the fact. As I recall, we started the Corvette C6 from the XLR which was a convertible. Made doing the coupe way easy.

Why bother with them? To settle down a Mustang monocoque we use a strut tower bar, an adjustable just behind the engine tubular brace to replace the flimsy stamped OE brace, we replace the flimsy stamped sheet metal rear chassis brace with a rectangular 20x10mm brace, we replace the panhard bar, the third arm and the third arm mount. Let me see what do we have to do to a 5th Gen Camaro monocoque...... oh yeah, I remember now. NOTHING. We don't replace any arms. We don't add any braces. We put in coilovers, sways, bushes and run it. For whatever reason, so many in the press and in the Muscle Car world just don't get it. The Mustang is a limp dictionary. Can we make it run with a Camaro, you all know that story, but we are beating our heads against a brick wall if we think we are going to get people outside this forum to understand the Mustang is not a Camaro off the showroom floor. |

On my 69, other than installing subframe connectors is there a way to keep the A-posts from cracking at the top?
I heard there's a suspension specialist that hangs out in this forum that gives good advise on Camaro's and better advise on Mustang's. Last edited by Fightinfire921; 02-16-2012 at 11:48 AM. |
