I've seen cars i liked but never just walked up to their owner and openly asked how they paid. Just never cared that much. Besides, if i have to ask then its probably out of my range anyway.

That was a rude question... Etiquette dictates that they should FIRST asked how much you earn, what your wife weighs, and what your party affiliation is.

Did you try to ask hem why thy wanted to know? Maybe they are looking to buy and want to see what they should be able to get it for.

maybe it's just me, but I find the question a bit too personal and a bit insulting to be coming from some complete stranger in a parking lot.

The guy kept pressing me, "but how much did this car cost?"

I wouldn't answer his question and just repeated what I had said prior, and my wife got into the car so we left..

I decided it was probably wise to drive around for a bit before going home to be sure someone wasn't following us..

I just tell anyone that asks what the sticker was and suggest I did get a bit of a discount. And leave it at that.

I have had people ask the same question, but those were people I at least knew, probably would have asked him why he wanted to know.
