Remote Key Fob Design Fault
Is it just me, or does anyone else have the same problem?:
I go to drive the car, and the trunk is open. It happens quite a bit. I must have too many keys in my pocket along with the fob, but seems the slightest nudge causes the button to depress, opening the trunk. Come to think about it, I've had the panic horn go off and the doors unlocked on occasion. Looking at the key fob, the buttons are slightly raised, so they seem to be a bit susceptible to false triggering. Looks like I have a definite need for a "silicone skin". Anyone else?

I've never had a problem. Just be glad we got a new key fob that looks respectable and not the old ones that GM handed out with every vehicle, whether it be a $8000 Aveo or a $50000 Caddy.

If it's the same as mine (I think it is) you have to hold the trunk release button down for a few seconds before the trunk will open. If yours is opening right away then maybe you have a defective one, you should check to see if both fobs behave the same way.

I have the same problem. But I have noticed that when I get home after work, I put my keys on the table, and dont touch them till in the morning when I go back to work and when I get in the car, the DIC tells me the trunk is open. So I know its not from being in my pocket.... hmmmm

I don't know if I'd call it respectable considering these are almost the exact same key fobs that VW's been using on their golf's, jetta's, and passat's since like what........2000? Def an improvement over the old keys though.

Had a fellow member stop in and visit just now. I was looking for my camera and leaning on the counter here at the office and set the alarm off on the car.

I have also had the horn go off. I think the fob was designed this way on purpose as a GM sales campaign to draw attention to the Camaro...not that it is needed....

The offending company if you want to share your comments about their products:
http://www.strattec.com/main.swf IMHO - Simple is better. On my '09 Silverado, the key fob and keys are perfect. Small, buttons are recessed, durable as all get out - I've dropped it many many times, it's gone through the wash a couple... basic - easily and cheaply replaceable key if I need a new key. The switchblade style? I give it a Fail. I've seen many break. Expensive. Buttons not recessed, very easy false button pushes... Someone had to reinvent the key and basically screwed it up. Just my opinion. I mean how many brain cells would it take for a design engineer to think... gee these buttons should be recessed so they don't get pushed by accident? That best practice was probably established 20 years ago when remote fobs started coming out. Give me a small bulletproof fob, basic keys, recessed buttons... 10 years later the thing still does it's job perfectly. |
