Double Din swap in a 4th gen? Easier than you think..

Double D Mods.

Through LS1tech I found these guys. Ran the price for the included head unit and essentially you get their $100 to-order bezel, a GM antenna and head harness, adapter brackets, and the head unit.

Example of one of their packages for a Firebird/Formula/Trans Am

Granted on the dash opening the top will need to be dremel'd a bit but the install looks stock, even on the 4th gen Camaro bezels they make.

They also offer Pioneer head unit packages as well, whatever your taste. They also offer the 5th gen Metra mod kit as well (w/ head unit package). Thought it was pretty slick.

Wow, I put one in and it wasn't to hard. I think it looks all right, I had to use a wood sander to make the hole a little bigger.

Pretty much saving up now for one on what coin I have on the side after fixing the T/A. Monsoon head is just getting old and with a glitchy CD reader and broken equalizer tabs, why not upgrade to NAV, USB, and DVD?

I belive that replacing the stock Monsoon head unit is one of
the first mods you should do on a 4th gen. Camaro or Trans Am.
The head units in the 4th gen. Camaro's and Trans Am's are
just as prone to failing as the head units are in the 04-06 GTO's.
Definitley do all the body work and paint work on your Trans Am
first and then do save up for a new head unit. What brands are
you considering?

Here's a few pics of my install from summer last year (97 Z28, skip to post #17 for completed pics) http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/stereo...post-17-a.html . The majority of the work and time went into molding the bezel to the right size opening. If you have the time, you can save A LOT of money modifying a bezel, instead of buying a modified bezel. I did it a little different and left the bottom trim the same size, cut out the fog light switches and top trim piece and moved it up about a half inch, filled in the rest, did a lot of sanding, and got it looking how I wanted it. You'll have to cut the metal tab at the back of the opening to make room for proper fitment but other than that, no major customization or wiring is required.

There's lots of info to be had on Tech, and plenty of clean installs. Its more 4th gen based though.

Edit: Just re-read your post and $100 really isn't bad, but the bezel modifications required are even easier on a T/A because there's less contour and edges to reshape. If you have the time, just modify your current one and buy the wiring needed to complete the install. Should still come in way under half that.

Good luck to you and keep us updated with pics!
