Found this while changing the diff fluid

A square piece stuck to the magnetic plug sitting next to it in first photo. Rough on three sides and shiny on one. I think maybe casting slag the broke off.?.? A dealer never would have disclosed this had I had them do it

Fluid otherwise looks ok (1508 miles). Gunk on magnetic plug was pasty.

I wondered that at first also because one end is beveled like a chisel. The end opposite is flat and shiny as if machined but all other surfaces (including the beveled) are very rough like a casting.

Size is just under 1/4 inch and thickness less than a 1/16.

I'd show it to the dealer service but I think they wouldn't want to make a statement about it

What kind of material is it? Is it magnetic (i.e. iron or steel)?

It is magnetic and it was stuck to the lower plug where it wasn't hurting anything. Given that it looks rough on all but one surface, it isn't a rolled or machined piece.

You can see in one photo that the one edge is completely flat and shiny as if machined or cut off

Appears to be a fragment of a differential shim. Google and you will see many images of intact and broken shims. Something to discuss with your dealer - bring the fragment and have them compare it to new (intact) shim(s).

Good theory. I made an appointment for Wednesday morning. I'll let you know how that goes
