CAI Fresh Air Locations
I have seen many CAI setups that put the filter near the fender with some sort of a box or shield protecting it from engine heat but I've never been too fond of that setup. Ideally I'd like to get around the rad and access some of the air coming through the grille but I don't know how this can be practically done since inspection doesn't immediately reveal a suitable path for the tubing. Has anyone attempted this and if so, what challenges did you face and how did you end up installing it? If possible I'd like to steer clear of cutting holes in hoods or body sheet metal as well. Thanks.

There isn't an easy route around the radiator for an intake tube but what you are describing is exactly what the Apex scoop does. It funnels are from the lower front grill into the air box. It can be used with any of the systems that have the air box in the front drivers side corner of the engine bay and have an open bottom. The only other option would be something like an Injen intake but that does not perform as well.

Don't forget that the air coming into the grille at the front of the vehicle is the same air that is flowing a foot lower under the car and outside the car through the inner fender well. The important thing is that you are pulling in the cooler ambient air from outside of the vehicle, rather than the hot air in the engine bay. Hence why our CAI pulls air from the inner fender well, which is also where the stock system pulls its air from. Sometimes we re-invent the wheel to no added benefit, I'm just trying to save you some headache and time. I hope that information is helpful, let us know if you have any questions!

The Short-ram style intake systems are the better option in my opinion. The benefit of this style is better throttle response due to less tubing. As long as you have a properly sealed air box isolating the engine heat away, you're essentially getting the best of both worlds.
I'm sure the scoops help to a degree...but the majority of the gain is simply from removing the windshield washer reservoir out of the path of air ingestion. Roto-Fab has a really clean W/W res relocation kit. Feel free to call, PM or email me anytime with questions. Best regards, Tyler 888-308-6007 |

All very interesting and useful feedback. Thank you all. In my professional opinion, the loss of head resulting from increased skin friction is offset (and then some) by the charge density from the cooler air. My IAT sensor indicates rapid heat soak of 30+ degrees in a minute or 2 of idling and with compression adding even more heat, I see a tremendous benefit in simply drawing air from the right place, irrespective of any incidental gains in flow... That and using nitrous as an intercooler :P

Where does that go? Where's the filter?

It is down in front of your plastic inner fender well and grille.
