Changed my differential fluid-4,800 miles-WOW!
Changed my differential fluid in my 2012 V6 manual, and I'm glad I did.
Very dirty, full of metal on the plug, and the fluid had a very silvery sheen to the color. I used all GM stuff...Rear Differential Fluid 75W-90 Limited Slip (GM Part No. 89021677 and Friction Modifier 1052358). Added just short of 1 qt. and added 2.5 oz. of friction modifier to the specified quantity of axle lubricant. Not going to get into the how it was done, as that has been covered. Very easy. No strange sounds before and can't feel any difference after, but I feel better knowing it's changed. For those who haven't changed, something to think about.

Changed ours for the 1st time at 700miles when we did our first oil change and the rear axle fluid was very dark and magnets were full also, just changed it again at 9000miles and it was very clean with just a light dusting on the magnets. It's one of the things I bring up and suggest to new camaro buyers/owners

A lot of the debris in the fluid, as well as the particles on the magnets are from the clutch packs in the diff (non-automatic V-6's and all V-8's). Good thing to stay after the maintenance. It will pay off in the long run.

I did mine last week at 6050 miles and replaced it with Amsoil and it smooth out the car.

Be careful what you call dirty. The silvery sheen is the graphite that GM puts in there to aide in friction reduction. The "break-in" metal flakes are captured on the magnetic plug. You were good for 100,000 miles. I find it comical how people assess the "quality" of engine, transmission, or differential fluid by sight only.

The gray stuff is put on the ring and pinion gears to assist the diff builder, shim for the correct gear lash setting. Not for friction reduction. After about 5000 miles the grey color disappears. This is from a GM / TSB issued. The rear diff is built by American Axle. I think GM may own the company, but not sure on that.

some have change theirs and ended up with chatter problems proving they decreased lubricity.

I'm glad someone said it, but you don't need to change Dif fluid until 97000 miles, in fact book says not to touch it unless its leaking.

Competitive cost of ownership is factored into factory maintenance schedules, not always your best interest. My shop routinely changes differential and transfer case fluids at the 30,000 mile mark and you wouldn't believe how unsettling it is, even synthetic based. Peace of mind with routine maintenance is certainly better than a $1,500+ rebuild. |

Johnyb is correct. We have only seen one that did not have the stock clutches fried in no time.....we reccomend the Jannetty diff clutches/mod.
