whoever said start out on a dirtbike I agree with you as you experience every mistake and learn how to avoid the mistakes before you feel it on the street, dirts way more forgiving.

I currently have a 07 Yamaha V-Star 1100 and i have nothing but good to say about the bike. I have a lot of friends with bikes and when i was looking for mine i rode some of thier bikes and test drove a couple ( some dealerships will let you ride and some wont ) and i kept coming back to Yamaha. I'm not the skinniest guy out there nor am i the fattest. I'm 265 and 5'11" and this bike is no problem for me to handle. I've had friends that were skinnier say it's a little to heavy for them but for me it's just right. The factroy yamaha seat was also more comfortable than most of the fatory harley and honda bikes that i rode/ looked at.

Also the Yahama place gave me $1,000 in accessories for buying the bike and no other place would even think to do that or when i asked they were like " No ".

Check out the Yamaha V-Star 1300 its a great bike and has a bit more punch than the 1100.
Yep he is like a 14-15yr old with a manual 2SS that never drove anything but a lawn mower before Crash or Burn time.

Though I can only preach, I was an experienced rider but bought a 9sec 1/4 drag bike and put a plate on it 72 Kaw 750 triple. That bike is what got me my Virago. The hair on fire speed demon went out at them speeds. I have no desire to go that fast in the open again. In a car yes, 9sec streetcar, plz, thank you.

Haha, ya this is true- but a lot of this is because there are no gap-jumps between me and the kwik-e-mart (I've had my share of 'incidents' off road). Dirt is more forgiving than minivan bumper .

Nice to see a couple MSF instructors jump in on this. Serious thumbs up to you guys. That stat's are pretty convincing- take the MSF. And no joke, ride ATGATT.

Here's my 650 running finally. Now it just needs new turn signals and a new headlight.

TFORD, If I could offer any advice on a motorcycle for a noob, it would be this.... Get yourself a dual sport bike and get out in the woods and dirt trails and learn how not to bust your ass. If you wipe out, there is a lesson learned and you can apply that to the street when you get a street-bike. Go down in the dirt and little to no damage to you or your bike. Go down on the street and that asphalt becomes 180 grit sandpaper to you and your bike. If your a good off road rider, you will make a savy street rider. I've done plenty of both since age 12 and honestly, I feel safer on a bike than in a car on fair weather days. Oh, and don't start with a Hayabusa.
