Be careful of the 35 mpg claims. A Camry or Fusio or Malibu are getting 34 or 35 with 200 HP engines. A 2.0T Regal gets 31. 32 or 33 would be damn good with 330 HP

The Regal, once again.....is over 3700 lbs (how?), maybe not a full 35 but it may be close with a few hundred pounds less weight.

Article makes it sound like the Mustangs never have a 4 cylinder in it. The 4 cylinders were fairly common in the early fox bodies. Wasn't there an SHO in the 80's with a turbo 4 that was faster then the GT the same year?

Do you realize how many of those they will sell? An american muscle car that gets 330HP but also 35MPG would sell like hotcakes.
Love that sig

At what point does these turbo charged I4s replace the V6 engines? Im even thinking and wondering if the larger ones could be used in the F150/Silverado. That may be far fetched but........ They would be lighter but do they cost more to produce than the 3.6/3.7 from Gm and Ford? Would they be more fuel efficient?

Like you said, why offer a N/A V-6 if you have a turbo 4 that weighs less with almost the same power.

Again, this is how i see it.

"SVO Package" -Turbo 4 @ 330HP ($23k)

"Pony Package" - Ecoboost V-6 @ 350 or more HP, my guess would be 380 ($26k)

"GT" - 5.0 Coyote @ 450HP or more. (likely to start at over $32k)
An ecoboost V6 starting in the mid to mid-upper 20s sounds pretty dang good to me....considering with only a tune you can get the heavy, family hauler ecoboost V6 Ford Flex into the high 12s in the quarter mile....just imagine what a tuned ecoboost V6 mustang weighing 3,300 to 3,400 lbs could do. Oh my.

But I have a feeling the ecoboost may only be offered on the higher trims and could cost into the 30K + range.

Hope I'm wrong.

couple random thoughts...

The turbo 4 cylinder was the SVO, not the SHO - (SHO is Taurus)

The Mustang will be getting the I-4 EcoBoost... I doubt it will be the base engine...

Seriously doubt the Mustang will get the V6 EcoBoost... could be wrong, but...

The EcoBoost, at least the V6 is simply amazing! Everyone should go out to youtube and watch the Ecoboost engine torture tests!

BTW... stock my EcoBoost was 355 HP / 365 TQ... with the Race Tune it's pushing about 470 HP / 500 TQ.. Was at the 38th Annual Mid-America All Ford - Team Shelby event this last weekend... Saturday at the drag strip, it was non-stop questions about my Flex!!! It shocked so many people it was hysterical! LOL

The current v6 mustang gets 31 highway. If they drop 200 lbs and bring down displacement, maybe tweak some aero, it's very possible.

Weight has less impact on the highway rating. Impacts the city much more so.

I'm sceptical about them dropping 200 pounds ANNNND adding a IRS as well as the reported European market discussion.

So adding 20 HP to the current V6 and getting 4 mpg more is a stretch. Not saying it isn't possible, just asking that you compare to the current mid size cars getting 34/35 today. If it were simply the powertrain then everyone of those midsize cars would have tubos to get even better mpg.

Most rumors I've read and heard say it would be the I-4 EcoBoost... While the V6 EcoBoost would be awesome, don't think that will happen...

What you have been able to accomplish with your Flex is no doubt an impressive feat. If the next gen mustang shows up with an EcoBoost I4, I wonder if it will be able to have such an aggressive tune and retain its longevity.
