That's what I was thinking too. Also, we have the self driving cars coming into the picture. Once self driving cars become popular, I can see cars that need a driver becoming a "safety hazard" and either being banned out right, or insurance companies will make them unaffordable to own.

I get what you are saying OP and have had the same thought. Cars from the '80's and early '90's computers are fairly rudimentary by today's standards, (i.e. minimal computer functions, no BCM, no CAN bus, etc). These were the "chip" days when you could open the ECM and replace the "chip". When the ECM went bad you'd just replace it and swap the "chip" in unless you bought a new one with a newer program.
If in 50 years the ECM, or the BCM dies will there be people that have the knowledge, technology, and equipment, AND will there still be firmware/software support? You see you don't just swap a new one in, it has to be "flashed" or programmed with the latest greatest software/firmware that corresponds to the car/drivetrain and options the car has. When the Mylink display that controls some very important functions (defrosters) fails will new ones be available and will someone have what they'd need to re-program it? When the heater controls or mechanical stuff on those old cars fails you can go to the junkyard a buy new ones and bolt them in. EDIT: I can tell you one thing, there USED to be carburetor and radiator repair shops all over town, try to find one now. Last edited by MLL67RSSS; 04-01-2015 at 07:29 AM. |

I don't worry about that kind of stuff, kinda like the idea though of being buried in my 5th Gen Camaro though lol. One post mentions the 80s cars having a brain and where are they are now. I also have an 84 Monte SS that has the small computer located in the right passenger side foot well , since I bought the car in 92 the only time I ever bothered it was to install a performance chip. Don't drive it much but the car still functions as it should. Guess you can call it an 80s survivor.

I will be 89 years old in 2050. If I am still alive, I plan to use my C5 to escape from the old folks home. If I can remember where I left my keys.

In 2050 it wont matter since fossil fuel cars will be illegal and we will be driving electric cars or something.

In 2050 I will be 80. I am not confident about living to see 80. I wonder if one of my kids would keep my Camaro?

It is a misconception that old cars are better than new cars.
