2010 camaro SS vs. 2010 Mustang GT/Track Package
so im just about set to go after my SS
my cousin though has a GT500 and just to back mustang up says there aint no way a SS could take the GT with track package on the track. there are no official times but he says with the track package the mustang will be faster around the track because of weight advantage. but either way the Camaro wins in a straight and thats mostly what i care about. but i also do care about the twisties so does anyone have any ideas or a good guess which beast would win? |

No, the SS should have a clear advantage. His '07-'09 GT500 would be a driver's race though.

To compensate for the weight the Camaro has better brakes than are offered even with the Mustang's Track Pack, a fully independant suspension tuned on a world class race track (Nurburgring) and as was previously mentioned, a very large power advantage to push it out of turns and down straights quicker. The G8 GT and GXP that share a less finely tuned version of the Camaro's ZETA II suspension has been described as the poor man's M5; their power and especially handling have been met with unanimously rave reviews. Rest assured that the lighter-than-a-G8 Camaro SS with the upgraded suspension and better brakes will more than hold it's own against the Track Pack'd Mustang, whose only weapon is its weight advantage.

your cousin is on crack... I recommend rehab immediately... his GT500 is the only Mustang in the lineup that's going to be competitive with the new Camaro SS... a new G8 GT could keep up with a Mustang GT with the track pack on a road course, so with a lower weight and higher power than the G8 GT, the Camaro SS is the easy winner here.

Tell your cousin that he should look up something call horsepower per weight ratio, also the camaro has near 50/50 weight distribution. Also the 4 piston Brembos 14"/14.4" front/rear are superior than the 2 piston brakes with "high performance brake pads" on the mustang. Also the camaro has a very stout IRS, not all tracks are butter smooth etc... |

I disagree somewhat. The mustang has higher skid pad numbers than any of the tests I have seen on the Camaro. That said I suspect the Camaro will still kill it because the car should be much more stable and planted feeling with the IRS. I think most drivers will find the Camaro easier and more comfortable to drive hard into the corners. The HP advantage and the wider powerband of the Camaro should also allow faster times comming off of corners while the brakes should allow faster entry times into the corners.

I would. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but even on a full race course, there is no comparing these two cars. Until Ford and it's pony step into the 21st century, it is going to get left behind on any track. The new Track Pack is a good first step, but they need to try and find a balance between a cheap fun car, and a serious competitor. Until they do, they will continue to outsell the competition (which I wager is the only thing they care about) and get embarassed in every standard of performance.
