In a race application the shift light can be set to the RPM that you would like to shift at with out looking at the tach. For example, the car makes 500hp and peaks that power at 5000rpm's. Some might set the shift light to shift just after the power band, say 5200rpm. That way when the shift is made the car is closer to the peak power band then shifting with out the light.
