Running 87 Octane in your SS all the time???

I'm not trying to call this guy out (suzook)  , but he claims he runs 87 in his SS all the time because most gas stations have 87 in their 93 pumps anyways. Also, he claims it doesn't make that big of a difference in performance. Does anybody else do it? I've always run 93 in mine from day one and read all about the fuse pull. If folks are trying to save money, why not just buy a V6 and run 87 all day? You buy a $45 SS, then fill it with 87 to pinch a few pennies? What are your thoughts?

Like the owners manual says it's "top tier" 91-93 octane for my baby. Most of time I use my Shell credit card and get 91 but whatever it's top tier fuel with the extra additives for me.

...lol...It's not the end of the world...In fact, I would bet there are more V-8s running on regular than you would think...These aren't Porsches or Ferrarris...lol...
If you notice a ping on regular, then damage may occur to the engine over time...and higher octane is recommended... As far as the pumps go, you're gonna get some regular from the hose if that's what the guy ahead of you used...lol... If your car runs fine on regular, have at it....Maybe not getting all you could for performance, but if it's enough for some, no biggie...Your car isn't gonna blow up if a tank of regular is put in accidently, they are made to run on all grades... Just sayin', I wouldn't do it, but if it happened for whatever reason, no big deal... |

I'm certainly not an authority but I know that "ping, ping, ping" means pre-detonation or that even with the computer retarding the spark the fuel you are burning is going to eventually burn a hole in the top of your piston. With 91 or better I know that my engine is advancing it's spark and I'm getting the best performance and mileage I can plus all the top tier additiives for a clean fuel system and exhaust system. Just my O'l Fart opinion.

I'm still stock I'd go for some 87 if I was taking a cross country trip or something. I usually only take mine on joyrides though..... spirited, redline inducing joyrides.
About this rumor of stations not selling you what you are paying for? I'm sure it happens from time to time. It's just like any other crime, to most it's not worth the risk.

If you are out and gas light on, only one station within 75 miles and they only have 87, not going to hurt a thing, i just wouldn't beat on it like usual...however since it clearly states in the manual to not use 87 then of course I don't see how it could be good for it on a regular basis.

I don't claim to run 87...I Do. But I never said most have 87 in the 93 pumps....it does happen though....quite often.

First, its not going to hurt the car to run the lower grade fuels, except for the fact that I believe the premium grade fuels are of a higher quality as well as being a higher octane, so components like injectors, pumps, and the like live longer on a steady diet of premium fuel than they will the lower grades. Our cars have a 19 gallon tank. There is a 20 - 30 cent difference between regular and premium, so on a complete fill up, you are looking at $3.80 to $5.70 difference on tank cost. Even if you fill up once a week, you are looking at an annual savings of about $250 per year. It does not seem worth it to me...to each his own!

You will get a degradation in performance if you run 87 octane fuel in the LS3/L99 vehicles. You can run it if you want to, but know that you'll never get peak performance out of it.
Will it damage anything? Not on a stock configuration. The ECM will back off the timing to prevent detonation (hence, loss of performance), and that protects the engine. 91 vs 93 makes little difference. If you are tuned, then the minimum octane will depend on the level of tune you have. Bare minimum is usually 91. The LSA (ZL1) engines cannot run less than 91 octane, period. Being supercharged adds a layer of risk if 87 octane is used. So, don't do it.
