Using factory gasket?
I just got my headers yesterday, looked in the box and noticed that the gaskets were not in their.
Question- Can i use my factory gaskets for the headers since the ones i was going to get were from the dealer anyway. or should i wait til the new ones get here? Thanks in advance |

Reuse the factory gaskets - after market ones will leak almost guaranteed.

To be on the safe side, I would buy new factory gaskets. There are only about $20 a set. Better safe than sorry.

I purchased Kooks headers, noticed they used Percy's gaskets in their kit. I had good luck with them on old school SBC's... Not so much with the LS.
"Tick-Tick-Tick...." I had leaks on 5 of he 8 ports. Replaced them with factory gaskets and they are leak free. Wish I did it sooner. |

We put on some headers on a Camaro with less than 7k miles this last weekend. We used the factory gaskets that came on the car. No issues at all.
Just make sure to pay attention which way that go. That goes for which side goes towards the header vs head as well as up/down (which is marked on the gasket). Also, without a doubt, mark where the dip stick goes. At first I was like....no issue I know where it goes. Because of all the hype about his on the forum I decided to use a sharpie and put a mark on the block just in case. That saved my butt.

Another thing that really helps with the dipstick is - using a bright flashlight find the angle that you can see the hole in the block, with the tube out but manifolds still on. It will be looking down near where the ABS brake lines are. Then with the headers on, get that same angle going with your flashlight and find the hole again. Don't even bother trying to get the tube in there until you can refind the hole with the flashlight beam.
New OE gaskets will work perfect. I've also reused OE gaskets plenty of times perfectly also. Put a straight edge across the header flange to make sure it is flat. Then make sure to tq according to the instructions, starting from the center working your way out. Doing that with OE gaskets, they will be leak free. |
