I bought stainless steel bolts and washers from a local hardware, took them to my shop, sanded the tops flush then put a high polish mirror finish on them. Wrap a piece of thin plastic around them when tightening so you don't scratch them. They look great and will stay that way.

5/16 ALUM. COUNTERSUNK STRINGER WASHER
8mm-1.25 FLAT HEAD ALLEN (STAINLESS) - I used 30mm but I'd be more comfortable with 35mm. http://www.allensfasteners.com/default.asp I had to modify the front set of washers using the poorman's lathe (drill press and files), then polished them all with Tripoli(?) buffing compound. |

Lots of great ideas in this thread! I ended up going with a bolt that I found on clipsandfasteners.com. Nothing fancy, but the look good and they were inexpensive at 25 for less han $10. Here is a link:
https://www.clipsandfasteners.com/Pr...uctCode=A13705 I also needed to replace some of my push type fasteners and bought a couple of boxes of a few different sizes since I seem to break or easily lose them. |

Hello,
My 2 cents here, 35 years from now when someone restores a ZL-1 they will be throwing all those nice polished/stainless bolts out and installing the GM bolts. I think I will stock up on the OEM bolts now. LOL |

I've got every single original part off the car in my basement storage room (including light bulbs)! So that should make it really easy to put the car back to stock in the future!

Any input on if it's possible to use M8 x 1.25 x 40mm bolts? I know 35mm is the oem GM bolt length, but I found some decorative bolts I like that don't come any shorter. Will the longer 40mm bolts hit/bottom out on anything at the bottom of the bolt hole?

Is SS to steel really a problem? Is there an aluminum component in the strut tower this bolts into?

I am a huge fan and advocate of anti-seize on anything that might come apart down the road. I wish Willys had been when I restored my 47 CJ 2A. Plus a lot of my gear runs 6 months a year in road salt. That $hit creeps in everywhere.
