Dumb question maybe, but is there anyway to adjust the power down on this bike until he is comfortable, maybe rejetting the carb or something?

I raced moto-x until I was in college and my parents owned a motorcycle dealership for several years. I can tell you for a beginner a KX-85 is probably too much bike. Hell, for a beginner a KX-65 maybe too much. Start him out on a trail bike that is a 4 stroke. They are much more manageable than a 2 stroke race bike. I would not put him on a true motocross bike untill he is comfortable riding. They tend to be pretty aggressive. As for you unless you are a decent rider I would not jump on a YZ-250 either. For starting out on a trails and play riding stick to trail bikes. Good luck and have fun!

Commits weekly crime
|
I rode Yamaha when I was growing up.
Of course, when I started, it was the mid 70's, and my Dad got a Yahaha 80cc bike. 2 stroke. Yes, perhaps a 4 stroke is easier, but I'm glad I learned on a two stroke. Plus, 2 stroke just sounds cooler in a dirt bike. Here's the bike...

My son's 3rd bike was a KX85. Personally, I would not have put him on a KX85 for his 1st bike. He had a Z50 for his 1st bike, then moved up to a KX 65, then to an 85.
A 2 stroke is going to be harder for him to learn a clutch on. You have to decide if you want him to learn how to shift 1st, before he learns a clutch. A CRF 70 would be a perfect bike, has gears, but an auto clutch & you can usually find them pretty reasonable. The only bad thing... He may outgrow it physically pretty quickly. |

My old man's honda 450 is an absolute beast of a bike. Lifts its front wheel like no other.
My raptor 700 cant even keep up with it in any way, except corners. |
