ANYBODY ELSE ORDER THE OP BLACK

I really love the black and I'm still happy with my choice, but I have tons of orange peel. It is basicly all over the car. Most people don't notice it but I do. I guess saying that it is not horrible but in the right angle it is noticable.
I talked to a guy at a body shop just to see if I could get someone to wet sand and buff it. He said NO. That the clear was way to thin on new paint from the factory and that the new regulations had changed the process that the factory is using. I did a little looking on line and basicly saw the same comments about the factory paint job. From what I can see online that it will not do any good to buff it. That only the high points would get shinny and it would take sanding to smooth it out.
Has anyone wet sanded yet? Does anybody think it would be worth a shot and see. I know a guy that is great at this and is doing my 68 camaro right now. Just not sure he will want another project.

Orange peel is normal on all cars now, you just have to live with it or respray your car. I would suggest a good clay with a polish if needed and glaze, topped off with a good wax job to smooth things out.

So the clay will smooth it down some?

The clay will clean the surface, and the glaze and wax will help smooth it down, filling in the nooks and crannies ...

I certainly wouldn't respray it, but a good buffing will smooth things out nicely. See Junkman's video's on paint correction. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showth...int+correction

There are a couple of threads here showing a member or two wet sanding and polishing up the factory paint but I wouldn't dare. As stated, it is really thin.

That is what I'm hearing from everyone. The car is great but it would be unbelievable with a slick paint job

orange peal is caused by the drying process. I assume that in mas production they would rather have a little orange peel than runs so they mix the paint to flash over a bit fast and hence you get the orange peel.

Black is the worst color as black shows everthing. with these robotic sprayers the paint is very consistant car to car but it is not as nice as a custom job where the person mixes the reducer corectly or hand sands if they mix incorectly.

it sucks but I would live with it. the only way to fix it is kind of repaint. you will go throught the clear to get the orange peal out of the base coat. It kind of depends on how much money you want to spend. it could theoretically be sanded and re-cleared but that will cost $$$

Have you considered taking it back to the dealer you purchased it from and asking them to correct it (if you trust their bodyshop)? You paid $60k for a brand new car, I would expect the quality of the paint to reflect that. The last vehicle I purchased new had a small exterior scratch on the top half of the door when I picked it up. The bodyshop tried to wet sand it out, no luck. Then they repainted the door, no questions asked. It was perfect after that.

Here is a local memeber wet sanding his car, not for the faint at heart though

I'm sorry to hear you have orange peel in your paint. I have a few blems, but for the most part I was happy to see the paint layed flat and smooth on mine. It was better than I expected from previous experience with factory paint jobs. Mine is Victory Red btw...I guess there may be discrepancies with the assembly line process from what you are reporting.

My ZL1 is black and I was looking at it pretty closely today. No orange peel. Very nice paint on my car. Very pleased.

There was another member here who had his 2010 black SS repainted to a show quality job with no orange peel. Said he'd always wanted a show car finish. The pics looked great, but the cost was over $5k. I'd just enjoy the car and try to maintain the original finish. Mines black too and the orange peel doesn't bother me. If you wet sanded it there wouldn't be enough paint left if you needed to do future paint correction if something happened, like a bird decided to target your roof.
