I have been looking at a small project car to work on over time. i found a 1983 camaro z28. the guy is asking $2000. i have been told that the car will need tires and an alternator to even get on the street. this is the type of car i do not want to tag because i wont be using it, only to work on. What would be a fair price to offer? How are these cars when they are nice? Opinions?

i know, i wanted to see if someone knows of a number value. i do not want to over pay for it cause i will gladly look for another car.

if it is all there and no rust it sounds good to me.tires and alternator is no big deal if the car is in good shape.from your post it sounds like it has been stored for a while.

No rust, runs and drives without significant issues, then yes. $2k is fine.

3rd Gen interiors are difficult to repair and replace. Keep that in mind when evaluating the condition of the car. Good bumper covers aren't as difficult to find but aftermarket replacement parts generally have quality and fitment issues. Otherwise replacement and performance parts can be sourced without too much trouble.

2k is good as long as other than the alternator & tires its all there in good driving condition. But, you could probably find one for less.

Hard to tell without pics and a better description.

Interior isn't that hard to fix. Dash pads are tough to find. Otherwise the stuff is out there.

$2K is questionable. I paid $5k for my 89 350 IROC in 2008.

It only needed tires.

You can thank cash for clunkers for about destroying the used car market. It's so much tougher to find nice, older cars for reasonable prices. I have yet to see a really nice IROC with decent miles for 5K. Most people are asking 8k. I remember the days when you could snag a car older than 8 yrs for peanuts.

You could get that car for at least $500 off if not more.

I bought my 91RS about 4 years ago for $2500 bucks from a mechanic friend. He had taken the motor out to swap into a resto, but once I told him I wanted the car, he put it all back together. In the first month, i had to do the radiator, fuel pump, front brakes and bearings, 1 headlight, and sway bar end links. I saw an IROC for $1500 bucks about a month later, and hit myself. Have a good mechanic shop give it a THOROUGH checkout, just like any other purchase. Id probably offer him $1500, more then likely that extra $500 will come in handy IF it needed more then just tires and an alternator.

Wrenching on your own car can be fun and rewarding, but getting yourself into a downward spiral of wasting money chasing broken cars is never fun.
