I'm betting your tune turned off AFM, PQ.

You didn't notice it at stock because you still had the stock resonators. Once those headers went on, I think you'd notice it when/if AFM turns on.

That being said, AFM would never turn off anyway unless you ease off of the gas pedal! I'm thinking you like your Borla so much you are one of those guys who goes straight from full throttle to the brakes with no coasting.

Turning off the D.O.D. without removing the D.O.D. lifters will destroy them. You do not turn that off until the car has been converted.

Please explain why?

Nope. All that's on the car is a Halltech and Xpipe replacing the Hpipe and resonators. Both of those were done before the tune. This is a Hypertech tuner with the standard 93 octane tune. I didn't do any one day tests or anything like that. Watched it for a month of normal day to day driving with and without AFM. With AFM 18.2mpg, without 18.0.

It may be that JUST turning off AFM and not tuning will net negative results. The tune could have made up the difference.

What's your opinion of the Diablo tune?

I was informed that disabling AFM causes damage over time due to "flaps" not opening & closing when switching between 4 & 8 cylinders. Apparently they get stuck.
Is it to what you're referring?

I'm curious, how would a tune make up for the difference of turning off AFM?

Get a Range device. Plug n Play. Kills AFM when you don't want it on. Or unplug it and have AFM available if you choose to use it.

I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm seeking some specific information.

I have never read anything until here that turning off AFM causes any problems with the lifters. Mine is turned off in my tune. As for fuel economy AFM can only do any MPG improvement in very specific circumstances. My car is a bit less fuel efficient on long highway trips where AFM can be turned on for a long period of time. Any other driving I see no difference.

I believe it is a mostly useless feature for day to day driving. Oddly enough the new LT1 in the gen 6 has AFM on the autos but not on the manual cars. So the manual cars are just disabled not a different configuration which makes me think just turning it off on our cars wouldn't hurt them either.

I use the RANGE AFM to turn on my AFM when I don't want it working. I have an aftermarket axle-back muffler system and when AFM kicks in, you get that farting sound. And my AFM will still kicks in when I'm accelerating when under 30 mph.. if diving easily.. If I'm pushing the car, then it does not kick in. When I just driving to work, I leave the AFM working but when I want to go cruising and show off the car, I disable the AFM. I'm still trying to see what gas mileage saving I get having the AFM disabled.

Fwiw, on my '12 Silverado, bone stock with AFM enabled, avg mpg was 17.5-18. With full exhaust and tune that disabled the AFM, avg mpg was 18-18.7. Don't know if the exhaust and tune made the difference either, but for a truck, it wasn't too bad really. Getting it tuned and removing the tq management, plus getting the trans tuned made a huge difference.

There's no need to change parts if you're not changing cams.
I went to GM dealer, they can turn off the AFM system temporarily only. Can I use the AFM Disabler RA003 For GM Vehicles? It is just a plug for OBDII

Wow, old thread!! For what it's worth now, we disabled my AFM back at 19k on the clock when we did the LT's, exhaust and dyno tune and have had no issues with the AFM lifters, then we did the cam swap and AFM/DOD delete at 98k. And I drove her really hard back then too, lots of rev limiter bumps and WOT throttle runs... I guess it just depends on the engine. And manual cars DO NOT have AFM, they had the skip shift feature.
